Hard-fought Victory Keeps Men's Soccer Undefeated in NEAC

Defense proves to be the best offense in 2-1 win over LBC

Box Score Lancaster, Pa. - The Nittany Lions took their 5-0 conference record on the road to Lancaster Bible College to face off against the Chargers in a rare mid-week NEAC contest. Although the Penn State Abington offense has been firing on all cylinders so far - the squad leads the NEAC with 49 goals scored, 21 more than their closest competitor - it was actually a pair of defensive players who came through in with clutch goals for the Blue and White.

Penn State Abington (10-2, 6-0 NEAC) dominated the first half, outshooting the Chargers 10-1 in the period. In the 28th minute, the Nittany Lions finally broke through with a goal after a foul deep in the Lancaster end. Senior defender Philip Curry stepped in to take the kick, and for the second straight game, he scored off the free kick. This time, from 23 yards out, Curry curled the ball around the wall beautifully and snuck it inside the post for a well-earned 1-0 lead. For the rest of the half, the Nittany Lions continued to pour on the offense, and the Chargers did not even get off their only shot until there were just four minutes left in the half. However, Lancaster Bible held firm, and as the half wrapped up, Penn State Abington held just a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Nittany Lions continued their offensive attack, once again pouring on 10 shots in the half. Again though, it was a Penn State Abington defensive player who broke through with the lone goal of the half. This time, junior defender Gustavo Alegria managed to direct a ball towards the Chargers net. A Lancaster Bible defender tried to head the ball away and out of danger, but only managed to head it further into the back of the goal. This gave Penn State Abington a 2-0 lead, and Alegria's goal proved to be a crucial one just a few minutes later. In the 81st minute, the Chargers' (4-7-2, 2-2-1 NEAC) Josiah Groff scored a truly impressive bicycle kick goal that put the hosts down just one goal with under ten minutes to play. Penn State Abington senior goalkeeper Dan Saint-Pol stepped up and made his lone save of the game on Lancaster Bible's last chance at tying the match up, however, and the Nittany Lions held on for the 2-1 win in the end.

With the victory, Penn State Abington preserves their undefeated NEAC record at 6-0, and they move to 10-2 overall on the season. The Nittany Lions now have a long break from NEAC play, with their next contest not coming until October 19th against Wells College. However, Penn State Abington does have a game in between, and an important one at that, when they travel to Galloway, N.J. for a non-conference match against Richard Stockton. The Ospreys hold an 8-2-2 record and a 4-1 record in the tough NJAC conference. Gametime is set for 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
