Box Score Swarthmore, Pa. - The Penn State Abington men's soccer squad saw their 2013 season come to a close earlier this evening with a 0-2 loss against Swarthmore College in the first round of the ECAC playoffs. The Nittany Lions, coming off their heartbreaking North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals loss in penalty kicks last weekend, were unable to muster much of an attack against a tough Swarthmore sqaud that nearly made the NCAA tournament themselves.
Penn State Abington managed a strong defensive showing throughout the first 45 minutes of play, with the defense and senior goalkeeper
Dan Saint-Pol turning aside all twelve of the shots they faced in the first half. However, Swarthmore was able to break through with a goal just 53 seconds into the second half by Michael Stewart, who managed to get an open look at the goal and fired the ball into the netting for a tough early period goal. Now facing a deficit, the Nittany Lions pressed to make a comeback in the game, but they simply could not break through the relentless Swarthmore attack. The Garnet put up 26 total shots in the match compared to just five from the Nittany Lions, and Saint-Pol made five quality saves to keep the match close. However, with time winding down, Swarthmore finally broke through with an insurance goal by Billy Evers to put the game out of reach and seal their 2-0 win.
With the loss, Penn State Abington closes out their season with a 10-5-3 record. Be on the lookout for a season recap coming here at
