Box Score MARCY, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team played to a 0-0, double overtime stalemate in the semifinals of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship on Saturday afternoon at SUNYIT, however the Morrisville State College Mustangs will advance to the conference championship by a 4-3 margin in penalty kicks.
Abington, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the NEAC, wrapped up its season at 10-4-3 overall for the time being. Third-seeded Morrisville (10-5-3 overall) will face No. 1 SUNYIT, who defeated No. 4 Cazenovia College 5-1 earlier today in the conference championship on Sunday.
After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Nittany Lions and Mustangs finished on their first attempts as
Phil Curry connected for Abington in the first round. Morrisville's goalkeeper, Eric Berglund, who was subtituted in for the peanlty kicks round, blocked the shot taken by Abington's
Bryan Werner before Chris Brocher made the shot to put the Mustangs ahead 2-1 on the count. Both teams finished on their next two attempts as
Alex Martins and Marco Papro tallied the pair. After Morrisville hit its fourth penalty kick, Abington's last attempt by Andre Lynahpingg, was saved by Berglund, ending the match at 4-3.
Abington saw five first half scoring attempts while Morrisville also saw five chances to put the first notch on the scoreboard. The Mustangs managed just two first half shot on goal, but Danny Peckham's shot in the 23
rd minute and Jesse Autudillo's shot in the 31
st minute were both turned away by Abington keeper
Dan Saint-Pol.
The Mustang's best scoring attempt in the first 90 minutes came at the 89
9th minute when Saint-Pol was lured out of the net to chase down the ball, only to be intercepted by a Morrisville striker pulling the trigger towards the net only to be blocked by Curry as he stepped in and cleared the ball from danger. Abington outshot its opponents 12-8 and took only two shots of the extra periods.
Martins saw the best scoring opportunity for the Blue and White in overtime. The junior forward  recovered a rebound off a corner kick by
Phil Curry, which was punched away by the Mustag's starting keeper, Rob Larkin, and launched a laser from the inside of the box with 23 seconds remaining in the double overtime, but the shot went beyond the post of the net.
In goal, Saint-Pol made eight saves while Larkin recorded six stops.
The Nittany Lions will lose five players – Andre Lynhaping,
Phil Curry,
Marco Paparo,
Wellay Asifuah, and
Guy Sikpa- to graduation. For Penn State Abington, it was of course a heartbreaking defeat once again however the Nittany Lions may still have a chance at participating in postseason play. The NCAA tournament field will be announced tomorrow, and the ECAC regional championship field will be announced soon after.
