Women's Basketball Drops Contest to St. Elizabeth

Schmidt tallies double-double in 45-71 loss

Box Score Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball squad dropped a tough game earlier Saturday afternoon against the visiting Screaming Eagles of St. Elizabeth. The Nittany Lions fought back valiantly after a rough opening half, but still were unable to match the high-scoring offense of the visitors in the 45-71 defeat. Jessica Schmidt led the Blue and White by putting up a double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 13 rebounds in the losing effort. Janay Winston added another 10 points, while senior Alyssa Kaye scored five points and grabbed 13 rebounds. The Screaming Eagles were led by Ashley Pledger, who scored 17 points, while Kelly O'Dell and Danesha Triplett each put up double-doubles of their own.

The Nittany Lions (1-5, 0-3 NEAC) were able to keep the game relatively close in the early going by making it a low-scoring affair. Although the hosts couldn't get anything to fall in the beginning, they managed to stay within reach of St. Elizabeth (5-4, 2-1 NEAC) by playing physical defense and grabbing rebounds. With 8:54 left to play in the half, Shannon Kennedy made a free throw that got the Nittany Lions within nine points, but unfortunately it was as close as the home team would get for the rest of the game. St. Elizabeth managed to get most of their offense from inside the lane, as the visitors got 46 of their 71 points in the paint. Schmidt managed to get most of her points down low as well, and the Nittany Lions scored 18 points off turnovers. Still, the squad struggled to shoot well, only hitting on 21.3% of their shots from the floor. With the loss, the Nittany Lions slip to a 1-5 record and 0-3 in the conference. The team will play their final contest of the fall semester this Tuesday night when they take on non-conference foe Bryn Athyn College. The game will take place at 6:00 pm on the campus of Penn State Abington. As always, be sure to check in at abingtonsports.com for all your news and notes on Nittany Lions athletics!
