Abington Trio Earn All-United East Honors

Latham, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team had a trio of players earn All-United East Conference (UEC) honors with the conference's announcement of this year's Women's Basketball All-Conference Teams and major award winners which are voted upon by the conference's head coaches.

Junior Amirah Hackney was named to the All-United East first team, while senior Nia Newman and junior Amina Reid were both selected to the All-United East second team.  A year ago, all three players earned All-United East honors with Hackney receiving first team and Newman and Reid earning All-United East second team accolades.

Hackney is now a three-time All-United East honoree joining an elite list of former players to earn all-conference recognition three straight seasons. Former teammate Angela Sanders is a three-time All-United East selection, while Shayna Rodriguez earned All-NEAC honors four times.

Hackney had another stellar season in her third year in an Abington uniform.  She averaged a career-high 17.7 points per game which leads the United East conference.  Hackney's 477 points scored this season is the fourth most ever scored in a single season in the program's Division III era.  In the process, Hackney also surpassed the 1,000-career points milestone and pushed her way to fourth place in the all-time scoring list with 1,250 career points.

Hackney scored 20-plus points 10 times during the season, including a career-high 34 points against the University of Valley Forge back in January when she reached the 1,000-point milestone.  She entered that game needing just 22 points and scored exactly that within the first 8:16 of the game. Hackney will enter her senior season with career numbers of 1,250 points, 531 rebounds, 183 steals and 58 blocks.

Newman is earning All-United East honors for the second straight season after putting together another impactful season for the Nittany Lions.  Newman averaged 11.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while recording 56 steals on the defensive side.  She also shot a career-high 46.7-percent from the field and knocked down a career-best 28 three-pointers.

Back in January, Newman reached the 1,000 career point milestone after netting 15 points in the team's victory at Penn State Harrisburg.  She entered the game 15 points shy of the milestone and finished with exactly that amount after knocking down a three-pointer with less than a minute to play in the third quarter.

In 52 career games in an Abington uniform, Newman totaled 611 points, 442 rebounds and 90 steals. Her 440 rebounds rank sixth all-time in program history and she is 10th all-time in steals. Overall, Newman finished her career with 1,181 points, 745 rebounds and 212 steals.

Reid had a historic season as she became the program's all-time leader in assists and steals.  The two-time All-United East selection finished the year with career-highs in both steals (96) and assists (144).  Her 96 steals broke her already established single season record and her 144 assists is second most in a single season in the team's record book.  Reid currently ranks seventh among the Division III leaders in assists and 10th in steals.

In addition, Reid recorded her first career triple-double in the team's victory against Manor College.  It marked the team's third in the Division III era and the first since the 2018-19 season.  Reid totaled 21 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds against the Blue Jays.

Reid averaged 10.2 points per game and a career-high 3.9 rebounds per game.  She'll enter her senior season 76 points shy of the 1,000 career point milestone as she currently has 924 career points.  Reid is also approaching milestone numbers in rebounds (288), assists (378) and steals (271).

This season, Abington (20-7, 11-2 UEC) advanced to the United East championship game for the third time after earning the third seed in this year's tournament.  The Nittany Lions finished with 20 wins for just the second time in the program's Division III era.  It marked the most victories in a single season since the 2014-15 team won 22 games.  Abington also won 11 straight games leading into the United East championship game setting a new D-III era program record.
