Nittany Lions Outdueled by Knights

Arcadia hands Abington pair of losses in Wednesday doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Glenside, Pa. - Penn State Abington lost both games of an afternoon doubleheader earlier today against Arcadia University. The Knights swept the Nittany Lions by scores of 9-1 and 9-2, handing the Blue and White their fifth straight loss along the way and dropping their overall record to 10-9 for the year. Nicole Battaglio, Cara Fiala, and Sheila O'Hagan had the RBIs for Penn State Abington, providing the only offense on the day.

Game one got off to a decent start for Penn State Abington (10-9, 4-1 NEAC). The Nittany Lions used a two-out rally to get runners on first and second for Trish Watson. However, Knights starter Jessica Wood was able to induce a groundout to short to get out of the jam, and the Blue and White would rue the lost opportunity a little bit later. In the second inning, Arcadia would get on the board with their first run of the game on a wild pitch, and the onslaught continued from there on out.

The Knights (11-12, 5-4 MAC) scored runs in every one of the remaining five innings of play, including a four run burst in the bottom of the fourth inning. Abington did get on the board in the top of the fourth. Watson got things started off with a double to lead off the inning, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Battaglio came to the plate and came up with her tenth RBI of the season, a single right back up the middle. That made the score 1-3 at the time, but with the four runs given back in the bottom of the inning coupled with the scoring the rest of the game, the Knights walked away with a 9-1 win in the game.

The second half of the doubleheader got off to a somewhat more promising start for the Blue and White. This time, the Nittany Lions were the ones getting on the board first. Cara Fiala got things started off with a single to right. After a sac bunt and a groundout moved Fiala to third, it was offensive weapon Sheila O'Hagan who came to the plate. O'Hagan powered a single back up the middle, bringing home Fiala and giving Abington a 1-0 lead.

It was not long-lived, however. The Knights came back in that very same inning with five runs of their own. Arcadia did it using a combination of singles and Abington errors and wild pitches to retake the lead and quickly put the game in question for the Blue and White. After Arcadia tacked on another run in the bottom of the third, Abington came back for a run of their own in the top of the fourth. This time it was Fiala who came through with the RBI, a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Breanna Robles and made the score 6-2. Unfortunately, it just wasn't the Nittany Lions' day, as Arcadia tacked on three more runs before finally the game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to lightning in the area.

Abington drops to a 10-9 record on the season with their fourth and fifth straight losses, but will have a great chance to turn it around on Saturday afternoon when they face off against Penn State Berks. Not only will it be an important chance to get back in the win column, but it is also a chance to take a pair of victories against the top team in the NEAC South Division and challenge for the top spot in the conference. Game one is set to start at 1:00 pm at Berks.
