Box Score 2 Chambersburg, Pa. - The Penn State Abington softball squad couldn't stop their recent slide earlier today, losing another two games to a NEAC rival. The Nittany Lions fell to hosts Wilson College by scores of 3-4 and 9-15.
Sheila O'Hagan hit her seventh home run of the season in the tough, extra innings loss in game one.
Wilson (8-10, 8-2 NEAC) got things started in the opening game by taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. A fielding error allowed Ashleen McCullough to reach first, and she made it all the way to third after a groundout and a ball in the dirt on a strikeout. Then, Tara Fields came through with the two-out RBI, a single that scored McCullough and gave the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
Penn State Abington (10-12, 4-5 NEAC) got back into the game in the top of the third when power hitter
Sheila O'Hagan came to the plate. The junior catcher got a pitch right in her wheelhouse and knew exactly what to do with it, hitting her league-leading seventh home run of the season and tying the game at 1-1. With each team's starting pitcher throwing great games, neither side could push across anymore runs in regulation, so the teams headed to extra innings. Penn State Abington had the first crack at things in the top of the eighth inning, and they came through with two huge runs.
Breanna Robles was placed on second base to start the frame, and worked her way to third after an unsuccessful fielder's choice attempt at an out by Wilson College. Then it was
Cara Fiala coming through with the biggest hit of the game to that point, an RBI single that scored Robles as the go-ahead run.
Nicole Battaglio later scored another run in the inning on an error, giving Abington a 3-1 lead heading into Wilson's last chance at bat.
Unfortunately for Abington, they simply could not hold off the attack of the Phoenix. After Fields was placed at second and moved to third on a groundout, Maggie Sipps tripled her home, cutting the deficit to 3-2. After a strikeout looking, back-to-back RBI singles gave Wilson a 4-3 walk-off victory in the first game of the afternoon.
Game two got off to a great start for the Nittany Lions, as they managed to jump ahead to a 4-0 lead over the first two innings. An RBI single from
Trish Watson gave Abington their first run of the game, and then
Sheila O'Hagan came home on an RBI single from
Sam Kidd. Then, in the second inning,
Cara Fiala found the gap in the outfield for an RBI double to score Beyer, and O'Hagan recorded yet another RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Fiala and gave the Blue and White a 4-0 lead.
It was short-lived, however. The Phoenix went on to score eleven straight runs over the next two innings themselves. Four of those runs came in the bottom of the second inning on fairly weak hits and defensive misplays by the Nittany Lions. Then, with the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the third, Wilson exploded for seven runs on four RBI singles and a groundout. By the time the fourth inning finally arrived, the scoreboard already read 11-4 in favor of the hosts. Those numbers got somewhat better in the top of the inning, as the Nittany Lions got four runs back themselves on back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by Watson,
Michaela Drogalis, and Kidd. However, it was as close as the Blue and White would get for the rest of the game. Wilson got four more runs over their remaining three innings at bat and cruised to the 15-9 victory.
The loss drops Penn State Abington to a 10-12 overall record and keeps them chasing the pair of Penn State Harrisburg and Wilson College for one of the top two spots in the NEAC South Division. The Nittany Lions will, however, have a shot at turning around their recent run of bad luck when they begin a five game homestand against the College of St. Elizabeth on Tuesday afternoon. The first game will actually be a continuation of Abington's second game against the Screaming Eagles from April 3
rd of this season. That game was postponed due to darkness with Penn State Abington leading 15-5 in the top of the fifth. That game is scheduled to take place at 2:00, with the originally scheduled doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm at Huntingdon Field.
