Camp's Great Pitching Effort Spoiled by Late Arcadia Charge

Walkoff double helps Knights defeat Penn State Abington 4-3

Box Score Cheltenham, Pa. - There was a bunch of late scoring in today's Penn State Abington - Arcadia baseball game earlier this afternoon. Unfortunately, the Nittany Lions came up just a run short, falling to the Knights by a 3-4 score. The hosts scored twice in both the eighth and the ninth innings to get the walk off victory, the first and only time Arcadia led in the game. Brian Camp got the start for Abington and pitched brilliantly, while Mike Kerns went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Blue and White.

Penn State Abington (19-18, 9-2 NEAC) got on the board first in the game, striking early for a run in the first inning. Dustin Kology led off the game and got all the way to second base on an error by the pitcher. Then, Callan Palmer drew a walk, and the pair of baserunners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. After the Knights managed to record one out via a strikeout, Kerns came to the plate looking to drive in some runs. The senior catcher smashed a grounder to third, and the infielder couldn't complete the play, allowing Kology to score and giving Abington a 1-0 lead.

Much as they tried, Arcadia (21-13-1, 12-6 MAC) was completely flummoxed by Brian Camp's pitching. The junior righty went six and a third scoreless, giving up just six hits and two walks while striking out one. In fact, the Knights could not even get a runner past second base against the lanky Camp. Meanwhile, the offense was able to scratch across another run in support of their starter in the top of the seventh. Tom Ditro led things off with a single, and then moved to second on a great sacrifice bunt by Ted Smallwood. Then, Ditro stole third base and made it all the way home on an error by the catcher to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead. The Blue and White closed out their scoring in the top of the eighth on Bill Parave's RBI single to left to bring home Kology once again.

Staked to a three run lead, the game was now in the hands of Abington's bullpen. In the bottom of the eighth, the Knights cut their deficit to just one run. Back-to-back singles opened the frame, and then a double and an error allowed both of those baserunners to score and make the Nittany Lions' lead just 3-2. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, things cruelly fell apart for the visitors. A pair of singles put runners on first and second with one out. A flyout put Abington just one out away from getting out of there with a win, but it just wasn't to be. A walk loaded the bases for junior Elliott Freeman, and the third baseman came through with a two-RBI double to right center to end the game.

The non-conference loss, although unkind, does nothing to affect the Nittany Lions chase for the top of the NEAC standings. Penn State Abington now looks forward to their weekend trifecta of games, starting with a Saturday doubleheader against Penn State Berks. Then, the Nittany Lions take on Penn State Harrisburg for a continuation of a protested game from last weekend. Things all get started on Saturday at Averthorpe Park against Berks, with game one getting underway at 1:00 pm.
