Softball Splits Doublehead with DelVal

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ABINGTON, Pa. – Freshman Carley Wenderlich went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, and pitcher Michaela Drogalis picked up her 16th win of the season as the Penn State Abington softball team salvaged a split of its home doubleheader against Delaware Valley College. The Nittany Lions took the nightcap, 5-4 in seven innings, after losing the opener 12-1.

Abington is now 16-15 overall and 9-7 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference play, and the Nittany Lions will play their final four regular-season games on the road.

In game one, Drogalis stuck out two and walked just two, but Abington was unable to get much offensive support on her behalf, falling to DelVal, 12-1.

The Rams opened the game scoring three runs in the opening inning before scoring seven more in the second, and twice in the fourth for the win. Meanwhile, Abington mustered up a run on the board in the bottom of second as Carly Wenderlich knocked the ball over the left center field fence for her first home run of her collegiate career.

Abington managed to post five hits in the game with two belonged to Drogalis, while Breanna Robles, and Fiala each recorded a hit.

Whitney Stacey struck out two while allowing just a run on five hits for DelVal. The Rams were led by four-hit game from Jackie Wear.

In the night cap, it seemed like the same tune as game one with DelVal jumping out to a 3-0 lead off a three-run home run by Krystle Mazza.

However, Abington had a better read on DelVal's pitcher, Stacey, this time around and struck back in the third inning. After a single, a hit by pitch and an error to load up the bases with runners, Alyssa Virginio started the rally with a 2 RBI single up the middle to round two runners home. Drogalis then flew out to left field, only to watch the fielder drop the ball through her glove to reach on base on an error, bringing Ashely Quenzer home unearned to tie up the game. Same Kidd stepped up the plate and slugged through the left side for an RBI single to give Abington its first 4-3 lead of the day.

The action didn't end there as Wenderlich grounded out off the pitcher's glove only to be picked up by the second baseman, who then threw to first for the second out, however that also advanced two Abington runners a base with one scoring an insurance run at home to extend the lead to 5-3 in favor of the Nittany Lions.

After a strong outings from both sides in the forth, the action began to pick up in the top of the fifth with DelVal looking to tie up the score.  After the first batter flied out, Wear stepped up to the plate and doubled out to left center before advancing to third on a wild pitch, putting herself in scoring position. Tori Stachura then grounded over to Mariellen Medernach, who committed an error on the play, allowing Wear to score unearned, cutting Abington's lead to just one run.  Abington struggled to put runners on the bases as DelVal's pitching squad kept flustering the batters with ground outs and strikeouts in the next two innings, heading into the seventh.

Delaware attempted its last rally of the game in the seventh as the Rams got on base on a pair of singles and a wild pitch to place the runners on second and third for the tie and go-ahead run with one out on the board. Abington's strong defensive finish by Medernach, who caught the line drive off of Tori Stachura before throwing over to third to pick off the runner trying to run back but was too late on the tag, allowed the Nittany Lions to get out of the jam and hold on for the 5-4 victory.

Abington will complete the remainder of the regular-season on the road starting on Thursday as the Nittany Lions head to Scranton to make up a suspended game from April 25th, before playing a second game afterwards. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
