Nittany Lions Sweep Gallaudet to Close Regular Season

Offense explodes for 23 runs on day, Drogalis earns two victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington softball squad closed out their regular season with a sweep of Gallaudet earlier this afternoon. The Nittany Lions won by scores of 12-3 and 11-3, with Michaela Drogalis getting the victory in each game. The sophomore pitcher also had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Gallaudet (11-29, 1-19 NEAC) actually got on the board first in game one, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Bison managed to load the bases with two outs, and Caitlin Stevens came through with a two-RBI single through the right side. However, the Nittany Lions got a break when the third Gallaudet runner tried to come home as well but was thrown out at the plate. Still, the Bison came out of the inning with a 2-0 lead.

Penn State Abington (20-17, 13-7 NEAC) got those two runs back and more in the very next inning, though. Drogalis got things started by drawing a walk, and then Sam Kidd followed that up with a bunt single. Nicole Battaglio hit a grounder to short in the next at bat, but the infielder couldn't make the play cleanly, allowing Drogalis to score and putting runners on first and second. Another bunt single loaded the bases for Cara Fiala, and the center fielder singled to short to bring in another run. Mariellen Medernach came up next, and the senior third baseman laced a two-RBI single of her own through the right side to give Abington a 4-2 lead.

Drogalis settled down well over the remainder of the game. The sophomore pitched the full six innings, allowing just three runs and nine hits while striking out three batters in the victory. Meanwhile, Abington continued to add runs, scoring two in the fifth before exploding for six more in the sixth inning. That included the biggest hit of the day, a massive grand slam home run from none other than Drogalis herself to give Abington their final four runs of the day and make it a 12-3 score. In the bottom of the sixth, Drogalis closed the game early by inducing three straight groundouts, handing the victory to the Nittany Lions in game one.

In game two, the Nittany Lions picked up right where they left off before. After a scoreless first inning, the Blue and White scored at least one run in each of the remaining five innings. The big inning was a four-run fourth. Penn State Abington loaded the bases with one out, and Drogalis came to the plate with the bags stuffed once again. This time, her fly ball was deep enough to bring in the runner from third, making it a 4-0 ballgame. A walk loaded the bases once again before an illegal pitch moved each runner up and made it 5-0. Then, Nicole Battaglio came through with another two-RBI single to right to make it a 7-0 lead.

In the sixth, Penn State Abington tacked on four more runs, with two of the runs coming on throwing errors by the Bison infield and the other two on a double by Sheila O'Hagan. Drogalis once again pitched a complete, six-inning game, giving up three runs and just eight hits while striking out one batter for her second victory of the day.

With the win, Abington closes out their regular season with a 20-17 record and a 13-7 NEAC record, good enough for second place in the conference standings. The Nittany Lions now head into the NEAC conference tournament on a four game winning streak.
