Women's Volleyball Dropped Season Opener to Arcadia, 3-1

Box Score
Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team welcomed Arcadia University to campus as both teams faced off for their respective season opener. The ball favored the visiting team as the Knights earned their first win of the 2013 season.

After dropping the first two sets by a score of 25-18, 25-19, the Nittany Lions rallied back from the deficit to win their third set by a score of 26-24. However the rally fell short during the fourth set as the Knights triumphed (25-16) to win the match 3-1. Junior Kate Schalck (Warminster, Pa.) and sophomore Abby Millan (El Paso, Texas), each earned 12 and ten kills for the Nittany lions, respectively. Freshmen Makenna Micklus (Macungie, Pa.) and Natalie Cadmus (Menifee, Calif) earned ten and 11 kills respectively to pace the Knights.

In the third set, Penn State Abington (0-1) trailed early being down 2-9 before freshman Sam Nelson's (Doylestown, Pa.) four services brought errors from the Arcadia's offense. Cadmus halt the streak with a kill for the Knights, however Millan immediately picked up where Nelson left off with four additional points to put the Nittany Lions ahead 11-10. The battle continued back and forth until the score was tied at 24 apiece, until Abington, needing just two more points, forced two Arcadia errors to put the Nittany Lions ahead for their first set win.

The fourth set began with the Nittany Lions starting off the block with a 5-0 lead. However the Knights would not back down as they stormed back on an 8-3 run to tie the game at eight. Unfortunately the momentum was in favor of the Knight for the remainder of the match as several forced errors cause the Nittany Lions to fall behind and drop a 1-3 decision on the night.

Freshman Victoria Lohman (Frederick, Md.) paced Abington's defense with 16 digs while junior Leah Brown (Southampton, Pa.) earned team high 13 assists. Cadmus, Micklus, and senior Veronika Bailey (Plato, MO) collected 16, 11, and 13 digs respectively for Arcadia.

The women volleyball team will host McDaniel College and Immaculata University on Saturday August 31st for a tri-match contest, starting at 10:00 a.m.
