With Darkness Closing In, Change in Format Proves Costly for Men’s Tennis

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington Men's Tennis Team lost a heart breaker today to Albright College on their home courts, 4 – 5.

In doubles play, Abington jumped on top with a win by 3rd doubles, Monte Dunson and Albert Bahn, 8-3. Duos James Howell and Steven Ly, fell 4-8 in 1st doubles, and in a match that went over an hour, two new members of the Nittany Lions, Mike Herman and Sam Borai, couldn't quite pull it out at 2nd doubles. After trailing most of the match they went up 7-6, but couldn't close it out and went on to lose 7-9.

Abington quickly righted the ship in singles action, taking the first set of the first four matches to go on court. Steven Ly made quick work of his opponent, 6-1, 6-2 in the 3rd singles, leveling the match at 2 – 2. Things slowed down quickly for Abington however, as Albright split the sets at the 1st, 2nd, and 6th singles.

After pulling out a tiebreak victory in the first set, James Howell collapsed late in the 1st singles match, losing 0-6, 0-6 in the second and third sets. Mike Herman, making his debut for the Nittany Lions won his first set 6-1, but lost his second and third sets 3-6, 4-6 in a closely contested match at 2nd singles.

Despite going on early, Albert Bahn , 6th Singles, and winning the first set fairly easily, 6-2, this match seemed to stall in next two sets as Bahn struggled to find his groove.

Monte Dunson, 4th singles, followed Ly's match onto the court and also made quick work of his opponent winning 6-1, 6-2 just before the 1st and 2nd singles were completed. With the conclusion of four singles matches, Abington now trailed 3 – 4, leaving 6th singles early in the 3rd set and 5th singles matchup heading onto the court.

With daylight quickly fading, Kevin Wilkinson's 5th singles match was switched to an 8 game Pro-set. Falling behind quickly, 1-4, Wilkinson rallied and brought it back to 4-5, before succumbing at 7:25 pm, 4-8, giving Albright their needed 5th point.

Finally ten minutes after Wilkinson's defeat, and over four hours after the doubles began, Bahn pulled out his match in the third set, ultimately winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. That match, which was Bahn's debut for the Nittany Lions, went longer than 3rd, 4th, and 5th Singles' matches combined.

The Blue and White squad will return to action on Saturday, September 14th as they take on the Knights of Arcadia University. The first match is slated for 10 a.m.
