Box Score ABINGTON, Pa. – After four sets, Penn State Abington downed Valley Forge Christian College for its first win of the 2013 season, snapping the seven-game losing skid. Freshman outside hitter
Rachel Bohl (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Blue and White offense with a game high 14 kills and collected eight digs in her defensive effort. Sophomore outside hitter
Abby Millan (El Paso, Texas) collected 11 digs along with six serve aces and seven kills for the Lions.
Penn State Abington (1-7) trailed most of the first set to Valley Forge Christian College (1-6) falling to as close as 16-20. A quick 6-2 run tied the set at 22 and the seesaw score favored the home side 24-23. Needing one more point to secure the set, the Patriots refused the give up as freshman Madison Arrowsmith's (Berlin, Md.) successful kill tied the game at 25-25. However three costly errors by the Nittany Lions allowed the Patriots to go ahead by one set.
The second set was controlled by Abington as they quickly escalated to an 8-0 lead. The Nittany lions never looked back as a 17-8 run secured the second set for the 25-8 victory over the Patriots. Momentum carried on during the third and the fourth set as the Patriots had no answers for the roaring Nittany Lions. The score was a dominating 25-11 and 25-16 to wrap up the evening for Abington's first win of the season.
Freshmen setters
Cricket Lennon (Bethlehem, Pa.) and
Sam Nelson (Doylestown, Pa.) each collected 16 and ten assists respectively for the Nittany Lions offense. Valley Forge's senior libero Courtney Farabee (Waynesburg, Pa.) collected game high 26 digs in her defensive effort for the Patriots. She was backed up by freshman outside hitter Katie Clarke (Jamesville, N.Y.) and junior setter Carli Kile (Minneapolis, Minn.) whom collected 11 and ten digs each.
The Nittany Lions will host the quad match on Saturday September 14
th. The first match will be against the former conference rival Penn State Harrisburg starting at 10 a.m.
