Box Score 2 ALLENTOWN, Pa. – On the first day of play at the Buttermaker Tournament, the Penn State Abington volleyball team fell to host Muhlenberg University in straight sets in the first match of the tournament before falling to Neumann University 3-1 in the nightcap.
Jasmine Van Lear (Spring Mountain, Pa.) led the squad with eight kills, five of them during the second set, with an ace as
Abby Millan (El Paso, Texas) recorded five kills and eight digs in the early match. Abington kept up with the pace early into the first set, rallying back from a three point deficit twice before Muhlenberg took control of the game to clinch the first point with a 25-19 decision.
The momentum continued to be in favor of the host team during the second set as the Mules jumped out to a 7-2 lead early before Millan tallied two consecutive kills with Abington trailing by just three points. It wasn't enough to slow the Mules down as they tallied five unanswered points, three off of Abington's errors, as Muhlenberg earned its second point of the match with a 25-11 decision. The third set played the same melody, with the Mules jumping ahead by six and leading by as much as seven throughout the set, as the host pulled away in the third with a 25-13 decision to complete their victory.
In the late evening match, the Nittany Lions hoped to rebound from five straight loss, and was off to a good start against Neumann University, taking the first set 25-17. However, the Knights took control and pulled away in the second set with a 25-13 decision to tie up the match. The third set saw a back and forth battle between two teams and it came down to the wire as the Knights ultimately took the third set, 25-23 for the lead before dominating the fourth and final set with a 25-15 score for the 3-1 victory.
Sam Amaro (Philadelphia, Pa.) started her first collegiate match and posted strong numbers with nine kills and 15 digs, while
Victoria Lohman (Frederick, Md.) led the squad with 19 digs as
Leah Brown posted double-doubles with 13 digs and 22 assists.
Rachel Bohl (Philadelphia, Pa.) also had a strong performance, posting a game-high nine digs on the year.
Abington (0-5) jumps back into action for day two of the tournament at Memorial Hall, beginning with Rutgers-Camden at 10 a.m. They will close out the weekend against Fairleigh Dickinson at Florham at 2 p.m.
