Box Score 2 ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Penn State Abington volleyball team dropped all four matches at the Buttermaker Tournament this past weekend, hosted by Muhlenberg University.
Despite the quadruple defeat, the Nittany Lions (0-7) remain optimistic for the remainder of their scheduled matches this season as they were able to compete above their level of competition against Rutgers-Camden and Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham (FDU-Florham) on Saturday.
Sam Amaro (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the squad on the second day with 13 kills, an ace and nine digs, while
Abby Millan (El Paso, Texas) posted 11 kills, three aces and 28 digs on the day.
Leah Brown (Southamption, Pa.) posted 25 assists as
Heather Kobrzynski (Chalfont, Pa.) posted five kills with four of them being aces.
Jasmine Van Lear (Spring Mountain, Pa.) had a strong showing in front of the net as she came up with three solo blocks and five kills.
Abington started the second day of the tournament strong against Rutgers-Camden, dropping the first set 25-21 before rebounding in the second with a 25-13 victory to tie it up. The third set was nothing but hard work and team effort by the Nittany Lions, but the squad came up short once again as the Scarlet Raptors edged Abington, 25-23 to get ahead 2-1 on the score before closing out the match in the fourth with a 25-13 decision for the 3-1 win.
Millan had a stellar performance, posting eight kills, two service aces and 18 digs, while Lohman also posted 18 digs with an ace. Setters Brown and Lennon came up with 18 and 13 assists, respectively. Van Lear and
Kate Schalck (Warminster, Pa.) both tallied six kills apiece in the four sets played.
The second match up of the day against FDU-Florham was not an easy task as Abington struggled to find rhythm from the start and was already in the hole after dropping the first two sets, 25-15, 25-16 to the Devils. The Blue and White Squad showed some life during the third set, fighting their way through with nothing to lose but came up short once again as FDU-Florham swept the match with the 25-20 decision in the third.
After the two-day tournament, Van Lear finished strong with 25 kills and five solo blocks, while Amaro posted 26 kills and 25 digs. Brown was credited with 47 assists during the tournament with Lennon showing 32. Millan finished with 21 kills and 44 digs, while Lohman posted 58 digs.
Abington will take a few days to rest and recover before returning to action on Thursday, September 12th when it hosts Valley Forge Christian College for a 7:00 p.m. match.
