Box Score COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington dropped a 47-40 contest against SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Iorio Gymnasium. The Nittany Lions fell to 4-10, 2-6 NEAC while the Fighting Tigers improved to 4-12, 3-6 NEAC.
Jessica Schmidt led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds with a pair of steals, while
Stephanie Keyes contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists on the day for the Blue and White.
The game was close in the early going as Cobleskill held a 9-5 lead with 14:08 to go in the first half. Throughout the next three minutes, the Nittany Lions struggled to find the basket as Cobleskill went on a 7-0 run before Abington managed to stop the slump on a jumper from Keyes. Cobleskill however kept pressuring on the boards for the remainder of the stanza, leading by as much as 13 points as the Fighting Tigers extended the lead and go into the locker room with a 30-19 advantage.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the Fighting Tigers extended the lead to 16, their largest of the contest, after a jumper from Kady Poterfield put Cobleskil up 36-20 with 16 minutes to go in the game.Abington managed to counter the Fighting Tigers' spurt by scoring 18 points to Cobleskill's six, capped off by a jumper from Keyes to bring the score to 45-40 with 1:33 left. However, Cobleskill was 2-for-2 from the charity stripe in the final minutes to earn the 47-40 victory.
Shelby Preston paced Cobleskill with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Tracee Shciebel and Samantha Davis each added ten points.
Abington outrebounded Cobleskill, 43-35, while the Fighting Tigers scored 23 points off of Abington's turnovers.
The Nittany Lions returns to action on Wednesday when Abington hosts conference foe, Penn State Berks, for the 8 p.m. tip-off.
