Nittany Lion Bats Remained Silent in 8-1 Loss to Rockford

Box Score AVON PARK, Fla. – The bats of Penn State Abington struggled to generate runs as the Nittany Lions were handed an 8-1 decision to Rockford University Monday afternoon, extending the skid to three.

Freshman right fielder Mike Scaringelli went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run as senior center fielder A.J. Vagliani, junior catcher Tom Ditro, and freshman Jason Roselli added a hit each in the four plate appearances for the Blue and White.

Freshman Diego Melendez started on the mound for Abington allowing four runs on six hits with a pair of errors and a strikeout in the three innings pitch. Freshman second baseman Christian Thompson also went three innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four errors, striking out two batters in the process before Kevin Faber and Ditro completed the game as both struck out three total batters in the loss.

Rockford wasted no time and took advantage of Abington's defensive errors, jumping ahead with a pair of unearned runs to open the game in the first inning. The Regents had their offense going throughout the game; scoring two runs a piece in the third, fifth, and sixth innings.

Abington finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded of Blue and White runners as Trey Guaglionona managed to draw four balls from Rockford's Jacob Gorsuch for the lone RBI on a bases-loaded walk in what would be the only run of the game for the Nittany Lions.

Gorsuch kept the Nittany Lions at bay, striking out four batters and allowing just four hits in the six innings pitched, picking up his first win of the season and the Regents' third win of the year.

Abington will return to action tomorrow as the Nittany Lions looking to not only rebound for a win but hoping to upset No. 7 Cortland State in a 9-inning matchup. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
