Box Score 2 Glenside, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball squad finally got their 2014 campaign underway today with a doubleheader against Arcadia University. The Nittany Lions split the pair of games, losing the first game 1-4 before taking home a 6-2 victory in game two.
Emily Wrenn took home the win from the pitching circle in the second game, throwing a complete game and allowing just six hits and two earned runs.
In game one of the doubleheader, Arcadia (5-9, 2-0 MAC) was able to run out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first and never look back. A pair of RBI singles was all the Knights needed to take the lead on Penn State Abington (1-1, 0-0 NEAC), who were unable to get anything going against Arcadia starter Erin Wilson. The sophomore righty pitched five solid innings and struck out nine Nittany Lions batters. The Blue and White did get a run across in the bottom of the second when pitcher
Michaela Drogalis hit an RBI double to left center to score
Breanna Lineman. However, it was all that Penn State Abington could get done offensively in game one. Arcadia tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth and Megan Roynan pitched two innings of scoreless, hitless ball to close out the game and earn the save for the Knights. Drogalis pitched a solid seven innings, scattering eleven hits and one walk while striking out one batter.
In the second game of the day, Wrenn did a fantastic job of limiting the Arcadia offense. The freshman scattered six hits and one walk over her seven innings pitched, and she was able to limit the Knights to just two runs on the game. This allowed the Penn State Abington offense to work with less pressure, and the bats finally came alive in the fourth inning. After taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an unearned run, the Nittany Lions found themselves trailing 2-1 when they entered the fourth. After two quick outs and a runner on first,
Bianca Monterosso came up with the Nittany Lions' first big hit of the inning, a double into left to score
Danielle Jones and tie the game back up at 2-2. Then, senior
Sheila O'Hagan stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall, putting Penn State Abington back up top by a 4-2 score. The Nittany Lions pushed across two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with their second homer of the day, a two-run shot off the bat of freshman
Breanna Lineman. The Knights threatened to make a comeback in the top of the seventh, but Wrenn induced a game-ending groundout with the bases loaded to close out the Nittany Lions' first victory of the 2014 season.
