Waynesburg Outslugs Baseball, 19-4

Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Waynesburg used a pair of big innings, scoring six runs in the sixth inning before adding 10 more in the last two innings in a 19-4 romp over Penn State Abington this morning at the RussMatt Spring Break Invitational.

The loss puts the Nittany Lions at 1-3 on the year as Waynesburg improves to 2-3 overall.

Waynesburg jumped ahead in the first two innings scoring two runs on three hits. Abington earned four runs back in the bottom of the second frame when freshman Diego Melendez doubled to left center to round senior AJ Vagliani from first to score the first Blue and White run, unearned. The rally continued as Melendez advanced to third before scoring the second run at the plate when sophomore Ted Smallwood reached base on an error by the shortstop. Smallwood would then advance to third on a wild pitch and later scored a run himself off of sophomore Callan Palmer's single to center field. Palmer would then advance to second on a passed ball before steal third and scoring the fourth and final Nittany Lion run, unearned, on an error by the Waynesburg's catcher.

Waynesburg continued to pound away at the plate, recording 12 hits in the game, before utilizing a six-run sixth inning to extend the lead before tacking on 10 more in the next two innings for the 19-4 score before both coaches and the umpires agreed to call the game on a mercy rule.

Freshman Michael Dunlap started on the mound for Abington this morning, allowing nine runs on eight hits, striking out four Waynesburg batters in the 5.2 innings pitched for the loss.

Melendez went 2-for-4 at the plate, collecting an RBI and a run scored, as junior Fran Caruso went 2-for-3.

Abington will continue play in the RussMatt Invitational on Monday with a 11 a.m. matchup against Rockford University (Ill.).
