Softball Sweeps Bison in NEAC Opener

O'Hagan powers Nittany Lions to 7-2, 9-3 wins over Gallaudet

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington softball squad earned their first sweep of the season earlier Tuesday afternoon when they took home two victories on the road at Gallaudet. The Nittany Lions earned a 7-2 win in game one of the doubleheader, and then completed the sweep with a 9-3 win in game two. Michaela Drogalis and Emily Wrenn earned the victories in the pitching circle for the Nittany Lions, while Sheila O'Hagan posted an incredible day offensively in the pair of wins.

Penn State Abington (3-1, 2-0 NEAC) used an explosive first inning to jump out to an early lead in game one of the set. Freshman Danielle Jones led off the game with an infield single, and then moved up to second on a wild pitch. Bianca Monterosso then reached via a dropped popup by the pitcher. With two runners on, Sheila O'Hagan stepped to the plate, and the powerful senior mashed a three-run homer down the left field line. Gallaudet's (9-13, 1-3 NEAC) starting pitcher Montana Murphy settled down enough to get the next two batters out, but then the Nittany Lions put together a two-out rally to tack on one more run. Breanna Robles singled to center field, driving home Michaela Drogalis and giving the Blue and White a 4-0 lead after just a half-inning of play.

Penn State Abington would tack on insurance runs in the second and fourth innings. In the second, O'Hagan cranked yet another home run, this time a solo shot down the line in left to make it five runs for the Nittany Lions. Then, in the fourth, Jones got on with a one-out single, stole second, and then moved to third on a passed ball. She then scored by beating the throw home on a ground ball by Monterosso. The freshman third baseman moved all the way to third thanks to two passed balls, and she then scored on a wild pitch to up the Nittany Lions tally to seven runs on the day. That was plenty of offense for Drogalis, the game one starter for the Blue and White. The junior limited the Bison offense to just three hits on the afternoon, while striking out two and allowing two runs, one of them earned. When she got the Bison's Rachel Sweigart to fly out to center to end the game, Drogalis earned her first win of the 2014 season and moved the Nittany Lions over the .500 mark to a 2-1 record.

Game two was a similar story for both sides, as Penn State Abington used a three-run first inning to take yet another early lead. Jones led off the game with another single, and then Monterosso came to the plate looking to sacrifice and move the runner up. However, instead of a simple sacrifice, Gallaudet made two throwing errors on the play, scoring both Jones and Monterosso and making it a 2-0 game. O'Hagan came to the plate next and made it all the way to third on yet another error. Later in the inning, she stole home, putting Penn State Abington out in front early by a 3-0 score. In the top of the third, the Nittany Lions tacked on three more runs, including another RBI and another steal of home by O'Hagan. Then, in the fourth O'Hagan added her final RBI of the day, a double to left to score Jones, making it a 7-2 game. Once again, Gallaudet was unable to put much together against the starter for the Nittany Lions. Emily Wrenn earned her second victory of the season in the win, scattering eight hits and three runs while striking out one batter.

With the wins, the Nittany Lions move to 3-1 overall on the season and start off undefeated in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. O'Hagan put together an offensive line that most batters would be jealous of earning in an entire week of play, let alone a doubleheader; in eight at-bats, she tallied four runs on four hits, including two home runs and a double, six RBIs, and two steals of home. Penn State Abington will look to continue their winning ways when they hit the road for another conference doubleheader on Friday. The Nittany Lions will take on Lancaster Bible, who are looking to break out of a four-game losing streak.
