Box Score 2 Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball squad finally got in their 2014 home opener earlier Thursday afternoon when they faced Rutgers-Camden for a doubleheader. After numerous rainouts, the Nittany Lions were able to take the field on a beautiful afternoon for a set against the Scarlet-Raptors, and after a tough 8-9 defeat in game one, they came back for a big 10-2 win in game two.
Emily Wrenn earned the victory from the pitching circle in the second game, while
Sheila O'Hagan provided a good deal of the offensive output, going 3-for-7 with six RBIs and three runs scored.
In game one of the doubleheader, Penn State Abington (6-2, 4-0 NEAC) actually jumped out to a big early lead thanks to multiple runs in the first and third innings. In the first,
Danielle Jones singled and moved to second on an error, and then she would score when
Bianca Monterosso followed that up with a single of her own.
Breanna Lineman later singled, driving in Monterosso, and then starting pitcher
Michaela Drogalis drove in Lineman to make it a 3-0 Nittany Lions lead. Then in the third inning,
Sheila O'Hagan walked and
Breanna Lineman singled to lead off the inning. The pair moved up on a double steal, and then each moved up again thanks to a wild pitch, scoring O'Hagan. Later on in the inning, Lineman came home on a groundout by Drogalis, putting the Blue and White in front by a five-run margin. Rutgers-Camden came back in the top of the fifth, however, using two Abington errors to push across four unearned runs and climb right back in the game. The Nittany Lions re-extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth, however, thanks to an RBI double from Jones and a two-RBI single by O'Hagan. Entering the final inning, Penn State Abington held an 8-4 lead and was just three outs away from their sixth straight win. However, Rutgers-Camden made another big comeback, using five hits and a walk to score five runs and leap ahead 9-8. The Nittany Lions now found themselves on the short end of the score line with time winding down, but they were unable to cash in on a one-out walk, and when Jones flew out to right to end the game, Rutgers-Camden came away with the one-run win.
In game two, it was the Scarlet Raptors who actually took a 1-0 lead thanks to a wild pitch. However, O'Hagan changed that immediately in the bottom of the first with a long, two-run home run over the left field wall to put the Nittany Lions in front 2-1. Then, in the bottom of the second, Penn State Abington put up a seven-spot thanks to seven hits, two walks, and an error. The big damage was done once again by O'Hagan, who blasted another shot even deeper over the left center field wall. When all was finally said and done, the Nittany Lions held a 9-1 advantage after just two innings of play. Rutgers-Camden got one of those runs back in the fourth thanks to a fielding error, but Penn State Abington re-took their eight-run advantage in the bottom of the frame thanks to Rutgers-Camden returning the favor with an error of their own. Meanwhile, Wrenn was pitching a solid game. The freshman scattered five hits and two walks while allowing just one earned run and striking out a batter. After five innings of play, the Nittany Lions still held their eight-run lead, allowing the game to be called early.
With the split, Penn State Abington moves to 6-2 on the season. They'll be right back out on the diamond tomorrow for an early afternoon doubleheader against College of St. Elizabeth. The Screaming Eagles currently hold a 3-9 overall record and are in last place in the NEAC South Division. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to take place at 1:00 pm at Huntingdon Field in Abington.
