Nittany Lions Flummox Screaming Eagles in Doubleheader

Abington takes home 10-2, 10-1 wins in dominating performance at home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball squad picked up right where they left off in conference play today with a sweep of a doubleheader against College of St. Elizabeth. The Nittany Lions rolled to 10-2 and 10-1 victories over the visiting Screaming Eagles, with Michaela Drogalis and Emily Wrenn earning the wins in the pitcher's circle. Freshman shortstop Breanna Lineman had a strong offensive day, going five-for-seven with four RBIs and a run scored.

St. Elizabeth (3-11, 1-7 NEAC) actually took an early lead in game one of today's doubleheader, thanks to an RBI groundout in the first inning. However, Penn State Abington (8-2, 6-0 NEAC) came storming back in the bottom of the second. Drogalis led off the inning with a walk, and then moved up to second on a single by Nicole Battaglio. Ashley Quenzer came to bat next, and she laced a single up the middle, scoring Drogalis to knot the game at 1-1. A wild pitch moved both runners up a bag, and then a walk to Danielle Jones loaded the bases for Bianca Monterosso. She hit a ball deep to left center, scoring two more runs. Later in the inning, Lineman got her first RBIs of the day when she singled to short, scoring two runners and making it a 5-1 ballgame. In the sixth, Jones got an RBI of her own with a sacrifice fly to score Drogalis. St. Elizabeth got a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Nittany Lions once again that back and more in the bottom of the frame. Jones got a second RBI with another sacrifice fly, and then Quenzer scored on a wild pitch. The Blue and White got their third run of the inning when Lineman doubled down the right field line to score Monterosso and make it a 9-2 score. The Nittany Lions finally wrapped things up in the bottom of the sixth when Melissa Craig doubled to deep right center, scoring Carla Ruscio and giving the Nittany Lions the 10-2 victory.

Game two got underway in almost the same fashion as the first. The Screaming Eagles jumped out to an early lead thanks to an RBI single from Nicole Morera. Penn State Abington immediately re-tied the game in the bottom of the first when Jones came rushing home on a wild pitch. Then, in the bottom of the second, a bases-loaded walk from Amanda McLean and an RBI groundout by Jones made it a 3-1 Penn State Abington lead. The Nittany Lions did their big damage in the fourth, however, as they used five hits and three errors to score seven runs in the frame. Sheila O'Hagan had a two-run single to start things off, and then a double from Lineman and three straight singles by Drogalis, Craig, and Illeana Gomez all scored more runs. By the time the visitors finally got out of the inning, they faced a nine-run deficit, and when they were unable to do any damage, the game ended 10-1 in favor of Penn State Abington.

With the wins, the Blue and White move to 8-2 overall on the season, and stay perfect in the North Eastern Athletic Conference with a 6-0 record. They'll get a chance to improve on that record even more tomorrow afternoon as they hit the road for a doubleheader back at St. Elizabeth. The team will then have Sunday off before coming back home for another crucial NEAC doubleheader against Lancaster Bible.
