Morristown, N.J. - The Penn State Abington softball squad, already off to their best start in quite some time, tacked two more wins onto their tally earlier Saturday afternoon with a sweep of a doubleheader at the College of St. Elizabeth. Once again, Michaela Drogalis and Emily Wrenn each earned the Ws from the pitching circle, and Drogalis did a number with the bat as well. In the 5-3 and 8-2 wins, the junior went 5-for-7 with three RBIs and a run scored. With the wins, the Nittany Lions move to 10-2 overall and remain undefeated in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

After a solid two innings from each starting pitcher to open game one, Penn State Abington (10-2, 8-0 NEAC) finally got out to their customary-for-2014 lead in the top of the third inning, thanks to a huge two-run shot from Sheila O'Hagan. The homer, which also scored Danielle Jones, marks the sixth of the young season for O'Hagan, and gave Penn State Abington a tenuous 2-0 lead. The Screaming Eagles (3-13, 1-9 NEAC) erased that deficit and more, though, when they came to bat in the bottom of the frame. A two-RBI single from Nicole Morera tied the game back up at two before another RBI single later in the inning gave St. Elizabeth a 3-2 lead. Finding themselves in the rare position of trailing a game, the Nittany Lions wasted no time in staging a comeback. In the top of the fourth, a single by Breanna Robles and walk by Ashley Quenzer put runners on first and second, and they would each move up a bag after a flyout. Then, Bianca Monterosso lifted a deep fly ball into left, allowing both runners to score and moving the Blue and White into the lead at 4-3. The Nittany Lions would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Nicole Battaglio singled to score Melissa Craig and make it a 5-3 game. That score proved enough to clinch the victory thanks to a strong pitching performance from Drogalis. The junior scattered five hits and three walks while striking out five opposing batters and allowing just three runs. She got the final three batters out in order in the seventh to seal the game one victory at the 5-3 mark.

The Nittany Lions offense provided even more run support in game two, and the team jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Drogalis. In the third, Drogalis doubled her RBI count with a second one, this time on a groundout to make it 2-0. She then completed the RBI "hat trick" with a third one in the fifth inning on a single to left to score Breanna Lineman. The rest of the Nittany Lions offense caught up with Drogalis in the later innings, as the Blue and White scored two in the sixth inning and three in the seventh to take an 8-1 lead. That once again proved to be plenty thanks to another stellar pitching performance, this time from freshman Emily Wrenn. She gave up just seven hits and two unearned runs while striking out seven opposing batters en route to her sixth win of the season.

Thanks to the two victories, Penn State Abington maintains their undefeated conference record at 8-0. The Nittany Lions now sit in a tie for first in the NEAC South Division with their in-state rivals Penn State Berks, who also hold an 8-0 record themselves. Penn State Abington will now get a day off tomorrow before the NEAC play continues on Monday, this time with a doubleheader against Lancaster Bible. Game one is set to start at 3:00 pm at Huntingdon Field in Abington.
