Softball Splits NEAC Contests With Lancaster Bible

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split its doubleheader North Eastern Athletic Conference contests with Lancaster Bible, dropping the first game by a score of 11-8 before picking up the 7-4 win in the nightcap in a North Eastern Athletic Conference matchup Monday afternoon.

The split puts Abington at 11-3 on the year and 9-1 in the NEAC, while Lancaster Bible improves to 6-18 overall and 5-9 in conference play.

Freshman Danielle Jones went 4-for-7 in both contests with an RBI and scored three runs while teammate Breanne Lineman posted four RBIs and three runs with a pair of doubles after going 3-for-7 at the plate. Senior catcher Sheila O'Hagan had a strong outing in both contests, going 3-for-8, scoring a pair of runs on a double and a home run, earning her 100th career hits as a Nittany Lion.

In the first matchup, Lancaster Bible wasted no time loading up the bases before Kathryn Ritter singled out towards right center to give the Chargers their first run of the game, unearned. Nicole Valinteno followed suit for Lancaster Bible on the next at-bat as she singled through the middle to drive a runner from third for the early 2-0 lead before Abington pitcher, Michaela Drogalis forced a ground out towards the shortstop, Lineman, to prevent any further damages.

Abington responded quickly on its turn at bat as Jones singled through the right side before stealing a pair of bases to put herself into scoring position. Freshman Bianca Monterosso perfected a sacrifice fly towards left field, allowing Jones to tag up at third and score home to credit the Blue and White its first run of the ballgame.

Both teams traded an unearned run in the third inning with Lancaster taking the 3-2 lead heading in the fourth where the Charges scored five runs to extend the lead to 8-2. O'Hagan started the bottom fourth with a home run towards left field to lead off the Nittany Lions, however the Chargers kept the runs off the board with a pair of grounds out and a pop fly towards shortstop to close out the frame.

Lancaster added three more runs in the fifth before Abington load up the bases on its turn before Lineman doubled out towards right field and slid safely towards third on a throwing error to collect 3 RBIs, cutting the lead to four with the board showing 11-7 in favor of the Chargers. After closing out the next inning, Abington rallied back into the game as freshman Amanda McLean, who pinch ran for Nicole Battaglio, saw the Lancaster pitcher turn her back and gunned down towards the plate and slid safely home for the 11-8 score. Lancaster Bible battened down the hatches and fanned the final three Blue and White batters to collect its first win of the day.

The nightcap was all about Abington as the Nittany Lions scored three runs on a wild pitch and a pair of singles through the middle for the 3-0 lead. Lancaster would slowly regain traction, scoring once on a wild pitch in the second before adding two more runs in the fourth frame on a single and a fielding error to tie up the game at three runs apiece.

Abington kept the momentum on its side as the Jones saw another gap in Lancaster's defense after O'Hagan fouled out towards first base and sped towards home where she was, once again called safe on the play for the Blue and White's fourth run of the game. Sam Kidd added another run after she collected an RBI single to right center, rounding Lineman from second for the 5-3 score before Abington added two more runs in the bottom of fifth to extend the lead to 7-3.

Lancaster looked to get back into the game in the top of the seventh by loading up the bases with runners before putting the ball into a double play situation, scoring easily from third, but giving up two costly outs in process as Abington forced a ground out towards the shortstop to earn its ninth conference win of the season.

Sophomore Michaela Drogalis pitched all seven innings of the first game, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits, and struck out two batters in the loss. Freshman Emily Wrenn started game two for the Blue and White, picking up her seventh win of the year after limiting Lancaster to just four runs on eight hits in the full seven innings pitched.

With the weather forcing a schedule change for tomorrow and Wednesday's games, Penn State Abington will return to action on Friday, April 18 as the Nittany Lions host conference foe, Penn State Berks, in a doubleheader contest in what could be the deciding factor of who is the best team in the South Division of the NEAC. The first game is slated for 12 p.m.
