Softball Swept by Misericordia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DALLAS, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Misericordia University on Monday after an 8-0 shutout in the first game before losing game two by a score of 9-3 for the second loss of the day.

Abington (14-6, 10-2 NEAC) struggled to bring the bats to life both games, going 6-for-42 at the plate with just three runs, all in the nightcap. Freshman Breanne Lineman collected a pair of hits with a stolen base and scored run late in the game as sophomore Nicole Battaglio managed to collect a pair of RBIs to lead the Blue and White.

In game one, after shutting out Abington with a 1-2-3 play, Misericordia wasted no time getting the runs on board early, scoring three runs in the first two innings for the 3-0 lead. The Cougars' bats continued its barrage, scoring four more runs, two on a wild pitch, to extend the lead to 7-0 before adding the eighth run in what would be the fifth and final inning of the contest, thanks to an 8-0 score to end the game early.

Misericordia's freshman pitcher, Alissa Steier baffled the Nittany Lions as she pitched four strong innings for the Cougars, allowing just two hits and a walk as she struck one just one batter in the win. While it may not seem much from the pitcher, the true saying of defense wins the games was certainly applied here in game one.

The nightcap was a different story as Abington managed to find life, scoring two runs in the second inning to get on the board first. After senior Sam Kidd and Lineman reach on base on a single to left center and a walk, respectively, before advancing into scoring positions at second and third on a pass ball, Battaglio nailed the ball in between the gaps out towards right center for a 2 RBI single, rounding the runners safely home to give the Blue and White the early lead.

The lead did not last long as the Cougars quickly rebounded in the bottom frame of the second inning, scoring two runs of their own on three hits to tie up the ballgame before scoring seven additional runs in the next two innings for the 9-2 lead. Abington managed to score once more in the top of sixth as freshman Danielle Jones bombed the ball over the left field fence for her first collegiate career home run, however the run did not ensue a Blue and White rally as Misericordia closed out the game with a  pop-up foul ball before striking out two Abington batters for the 9-3 victory and the sweep.

Abington will look to rebound from the slump tomorrow as the Nittany Lions travel to Doylestown, Pa. to take on the Rams of Delaware Valley in a doubleheader matchup. The first game is slatedfor 3 p.m.
