Nittany Lions Blast Their Way to Victories Over Delaware Valley

Penn State Abington explodes for 9-1 and 15-2 wins over the Aggies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Doylestown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball squad took a pair of victories away from Delaware Valley earlier Tuesday afternoon thanks to an incredible offensive onslaught. The Blue and White took home a 9-1 victory in game one before running away to a 15-2 win in the second contest thanks to a ten-run fourth inning. Sophomore Ashley Quenzer and freshman Breanna Lineman each notched their first collegiate home runs while starting pitchers Michaela Drogalis and Emily Wrenn each pitched complete games and allowed just 12 hits between themselves.

Delaware Valley (3-25, 2-10 MAC) actually jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first contest of the day. An RBI single by Jackie Wear gave the hosts their one-run lead, but Penn State Abington (16-6, 10-2 NEAC) came roaring back in the second to go ahead of the Aggies. Nicole Battaglio got the Blue and White on the board with a two-RBI single into center field to put the visitors ahead 2-1. Later in the inning, Danielle Jones singles up the middle herself with the bases loaded to score another run, and then a fielder's choice plated another run to give Penn State Abington a 4-1 lead coming out of the second. In the third, the Nittany Lions expanded on their lead with another big rally. Breanna Lineman led off the inning with a deep blast to left center for her first home run as a Nittany Lion. Battaglio tallied her third RBI later in the inning on a double to right field. After the Aggies made a pitching change, Carla Ruscio smoked an RBI single up the middle before Ashley Quenzer drove in another run with a groundout. Jones capped off the scoring with an RBI double to right to score Ruscio and make it a 9-1 ballgame. It would stay that way the rest of the affair, thanks to solid pitching from Drogalis. The junior threw a complete game, giving up just four hits and an earned run while striking out four opposing batters.

Game two was a similar proceeding, as Penn State Abington could not be stopped at the plate. The Blue and White got single runs in the first and second innings before a three-run third, but the major damage was done in the fourth. The Nittany Lions batted through the lineup and sent fourteen batters to the plate en route to a 10-run explosion. The first run came thanks to a double steal, with Jones swiping home to make it a 6-2 game. Lineman plated the next run with an RBI single, and later in the inning, three straight RBI singles from Sam Kidd, Drogalis, and Amanda McLean gave the Blue and White a 10-2 advantage. That wasn't the end, however, as a wild pitch later in the inning scored Drogalis before Quenzer hit a laser over the center field wall to score three more runs. An error later in the frame plated one more run, giving the Nittany Lions their 15-2 lead. This was definitely plenty with Wrenn on the mound, as she struck out a batter and scattered eight hits to come away with the complete game victory.

The pair of wins moves Penn State Abington to 16-6 on the season, and the Nittany Lions now look forward to a day off before a doubleheader against conference foe Gallaudet on Thursday. The Bison come to Abington sporting a 5-11 NEAC record and are on the outside looking in at a playoff spot in the NEAC South Division. The Nittany Lions, meanwhile, are sitting pretty in a tie for first atop the division with Penn State Berks, and the Blue and White look to continue their winning ways when they take on the Bison. Game one is slated to open at 3:00 on Thursday at the Huntingdon Road field in Abington.
