Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team added two more wins to their conference records as the Nittany Lions swept Lancaster Bible 5-3 in the first contest before picking up their sixth straight wins with a 10-0 win in the nightcap.
Junior catcher
Sheila O'Hagan led the Nittany Lions at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a double, four RBIs, a home run, and pair of runs. Sophomore pitcher
Michaela Drogalis was not only strong on the mound, picking up her eighth win of the year, but she also add additional muscle at the plate, going 4-for-7 with three runs, a double and two RBIs in the sweep.
In the first contest, Lancaster Bible (12-21, 7-12 NEAC) got on the scoreboard first in the bottom frame of the third inning as Anna Harris posted an RBI single to drive a Charger runner home from second for 1-0 lead. Abington (20-6, 14-2 NEAC) would quickly respond on the next turn as freshman shortstop Breanne Lineman reached base on a fielders choice before advancing towards second after senior second baseman
Sam Kidd reached first on an error by the Chargers' left field. Drogalis would then smack the ball out towards right field for a double, driving home two runs, both unearned, to give the Blue and White its first lead of the ballgame.
Both teams would strive to score additional runs but neither side could get past the strong defensive plays until the seventh inning when Lancaster Bible would knot the score. After a pair of singles by the Chargers and an error to put the two runners into scoring positions, Abington hoped to prevent any runs from scoring but came up short as Richelle Kane successfully brought the tying run home on a fielder's choice before Drogalis closed out the final inning with a strike out and a ground out to second to initiate the international tie-breaking rules into extra innings.
Abington stepped up on the attack in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three runs on four hits before limiting Lancaster to just one run in the bottom frame for the 5-3 score as the Blue and White collected their first win of the day.
Drogalis went eight innings strong on the mound for the win as she struck out five batters and allowed only three runs on six hits in the 37 batters faced.
The Nittany Lions showed their true power in the nightcap, scoring three runs on four hits in the first two innings. Freshman
Emily Wrenn, who picked up her 10th career win, flustered the Lancaster Bible batters, forcing multiple groundouts and pop flies in the next four innings, allowing Abington to score five more runs in the top of the fourth as O'Hagan homered over the left field fence to make it an 8-0 ball game. The Nittany Lions continued their barrage of hits, scoring two additional runs in the fifth frame before shutting out the Chargers 10-0, ending the game early on the eight-run ruling.
The Nittany Lions will return to action tomorrow as they travel west down the 276 turnpike to take on conference foe, Penn State Berks in what could be the deciding matchup of who earns the bragging rights to the NEAC South Division regular season champions and the top seed heading into the NEAC Conference Championship. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
