Box Score JENKINTOWN, Pa. – The Penn State Abington got its first home series sweep against a North Eastern Athletic Conference opponent over the weekend, sweeping Cazenovia College in three games, picking up an 8-4 win on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day.
The Nittany Lions took the opportunity to recognize three of their own seniors, outfielder
A.J. Vagliani, pitchers
Brian Camp and
Kevin Faber before the game.
The Nittany Lions went in to the opening game of the series, sweeping the doubleheader on Saturday before adding a full weekend series sweep at home for the first time this season.
Abington got on board early into the game after
Vince DiPiero managed to reach first safely on an error by the Wildcat's third baseman, allowing Vagliani to cross the plate from third, unearned, to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
After loading up the bases full of Wildcats on an error, a single, and a walk, Cazenovia had to thank Abington's starting pitcher,
Tom Ditro for allowing a run to cross on a bases-loaded walk with two outs before Ditro shut out the inning with a fly out to center field to leave three Wildcats on base.
On the turn of the frame, Ditro made up for his mistakes at the plate, singling through the left side for an RBI single, rounding teammate
Fran Caruso home from first to give Abington a 2-1 lead before advancing to second on an error. Vagliani returned the favor, as he too singled through the left side for an RBI single to plate Ditro safely home to add a third run on the board for the Blue and White.
With the bases now loaded with baby blue jerseys, Cazenovia called for a pitching changed, hoping to stop the bleeding but instead it just opened the wound even more as
Jason Roselli singled out towards the left center gap, driving in two runs for the 5-1 score.
Ditro continued to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard as the Blue and White added three additional runs in the next four innings for the 8-1 score before Cazenovia came back to life in the top of the eighth, looking to rally back into the game. After a double ground rule placed a 'Cat on second, Dan Honde singled out toward right center for an RBI single before scoring a run of his own on a double to left field. With the runners on the corners, Chris Williams successfully pulled off a sacrifice bunt to not only advance a runner up a base, but he also collected an RBI on the play before the end of the inning.
The Wildcats remained restless and looked to produce a comeback by adding more runs in the ninth with the scoreboard showing 8-4 in favor of Abington, however
Michael Dunlap filled in reliever and forced a ground out to third, fanned a batter, and ended the game with a fly out to left field as the Nittany Lions held on for the 8-4 victory and the sweep.
Roselli went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and a run as Vagliani scored three runs with an RBI after going 3-for-4 on the day. Ditro pitched eight strong innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits with three walks and fanned seven batters to pick up his third win of the season.
With the sweep, Penn State Abington are now 15-17-1 on the year and 8-7 in the NEAC and jumped up into fourth place after SUNYIT lost all three games to Penn State Berks on the weekend, falling into fifth place in the standings. The Nittany Lions will look to keep their playoffs bid alive as they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Bison of Gallaudet University next weekend, but first the Blue and White will throw in a pair of non-conference games to keep the team focused before the weekend. Abington will travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Wednesday, April 30 for the 4 p.m. contest before hosting New Jersey College University the following day for the 3:30 p.m. game.
