Softball Splits With Wilson to Close Regular Season

Nittany Lions take one of two to close out the regular season with their best record in nearly 20 years

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball squad played their final regular season games of the 2014 campaign earlier Monday afternoon. The Nittany Lions took on NEAC conference foe Wilson in a doubleheader at Huntingdon Field, and after the Phoenix run-ruled the Blue and White in game one, Penn State Abington returned the favor in an 8-0 shutout in game two. Emily Wrenn put together a fantastic start in the second contest, throwing a complete game shutout to take home the victory. The Nittany Lions also got great offensive performances out of much of their lineup in game two, including Sheila O'Hagan, who drilled a solo shot to center for her 13th home run of the year.

The Nittany Lions struggled to get anything positive going in game one, as Wilson (14-12, 11-9 NEAC) beat up on their hosts throughout the contest. The first two innings went by scoreless, but then the Phoenix scored runs in each of the next four frames, including four-spots in both the fifth and sixth inning. The three-four-five batters did a majority of the damage, combining for seven hits, seven RBIs, and seven runs scored, including a three-run dinger by Nicole Long. Penn State Abington (21-9, 15-5 NEAC) managed to scratch across one run in the third inning on an RBI double by Carla Ruscio, but it was not nearly enough to faze Phoenix starter Taylor Crouse. The sophomore scattered seven hits in six innings of work while allowing one unearned run and striking out five Nittany Lions batters.

Game two was a completely different story for the Blue and White. Right from the start, Penn State Abington got off on the right foot thanks to a moonshot home run from O'Hagan over the center field wall. Even that lone run was more than enough to back up Wrenn, who proved virtually unhittable for the Phoenix batters. The freshman allowed just four hits in her five innings of work, allowing no runs and striking out two batters. The Nittany Lions did add some insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings of play. In the fourth, Breanna Lineman and Sam Kidd both tallied RBI hits before a throwing error plated Kidd later in the frame. Then in the fifth inning, Kidd tallied another RBI with a single through the left side before back-to-back doubles by Michaela Drogalis and Nicole Battaglio plated three more runs to end the game after five innings of play.

With the split, the Nittany Lions close out their regular season with a 21-9 overall record. They also finish with a 15-5 record within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. That marks the best season for the program under the guidance of head coach David Hoch, who has coached the team to a better win percentage than its previous season in each of his four seasons at the helm. Those are also both the best record and best conference record for Penn State Abington softball since 1995. The Nittany Lions now look forward to the 2014 NEAC Championships, which will take place at one of three North Division schools. The race for the first seed in the North is still underway, and one of SUNY Cobleskill, Keuka, or SUNYIT will end up at the top and in the position of hosting the entire tournament starting this Friday.
