Nittany Lions Outlast Cairn for Split of Doubleheader

Penn State Abington dodges rain and opposing offense in 5-2 victory in game two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Langhorne, Pa. – Penn State Abington took on the Highlanders of Cairn University for a doubleheader earlier on a mucky Tuesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions fell to a furious Cairn comeback in game one of the pair before locking down a 5-2 win in the second contest. Senior pitcher Brian Camp earned the complete game victory as the starter in game two, while freshman Mike Scaringelli notched three RBIs on the afternoon to take the season lead in that category with 18 total.

Cairn (9-29, 1-7 CSAC) took an early lead in the first game of the day with two runs in the first inning. Jacob Allen led off the inning with a single, and he moved up to second thanks to an error. A sacrifice bunt pushed him to third, and then a balk called on Nittany Lions (16-18-1, 8-7 NEAC) starting pitcher Jeff Davis plated Allen for the first run of the contest. Caleb Lang came to the plate next, and he laced a solo shot well beyond the outfield fence to quickly make it a 2-0 game. However, Penn State Abington came back with a two-run inning of their own in the top of the next frame. With two outs and runners on first and second, Trey Guaglionona came to the plate and singled to score Fran Caruso from second, cutting the deficit in half. In the next at bat, a passed ball allowed both runners to move up, plating A.J. Vagliani and tying the game back up at 2-2. In the next inning, the Blue and White took their first lead of the day, thanks to an RBI double by Scaringelli to score Ted Smallwood. Later in the third, Fran Caruso attempted to steal second base, and he managed to force the Cairn pitcher to make a wild throw in an attempt to throw him out. This allowed Scaringelli to score from third and give the Nittany Lions a 4-2 lead. They made it 5-2 in the fifth inning thanks to another RBI double by Scaringelli, and things were looking good for the visitors. However, in their final inning of the game, Cairn's offense finally came back to life. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out for Kenny Searle. He knocked in one run with a single, making it 5-3 and leaving the bases loaded again. A bases loaded walk plated the next run to get the Highlanders back within one, and they were able to win the game in the very next at bat. Trent Fiori knocked a single into the outfield, scoring two runs and giving the hosts the 6-5 walk off victory.

After Penn State Abington was left with a sour taste in their mouths due to the result of the first contest, the Nittany Lions looked to exorcise those demons with a strong game two. This time, they were able to get out in front early themselves thanks to runs in the first and second innings. In the first, Diego Melendez knocked in Ted Smallwood to make it a 1-0 game, and then a double-steal in the second inning plated Michael Dunlap to make it a 2-0 contest. Cairn cut into that lead with a lone run in the third, but the Nittany Lions got even more breathing room back in the fifth with two more runs. A single plus a fielding error on another hit by Melendez scored Mike Scaringelli, and then A.J. Vagliani managed to knock Melendez in to give the Nittany Lions a 4-1 advantage. They got their fifth run in the next inning thanks to Scaringelli's third RBI of the day, and that was more than enough offense to back up Camp. The lanky senior, in what could possibly have been his final start as an Abington player, managed to effectively shut down the Highlanders offense for a majority of the game. Camp constantly had opposing batters off balance with a solid mix of pitches, and he pitched around six hits and eight walks to allow just two earned runs. He also sent seven opposing batters back to the dugout via the strikeout. When he locked up Cairn's Mike DeLuca with a sick pitch to strike him out looking and end the game, Penn State Abington came away with a 5-2 victory.

With the split, the Nittany Lions move to 16-18-1 on the season. The Blue and White now have one non-conference game left on the schedule this week before they close out the regular season this weekend. Penn State Abington will play host to New Jersey City University for a single game this Thursday at Alverthorpe Park. The Gothic Knights will bring an 11-25 overall record and a 4-14 record out of the NJAC when they come to Jenkintown for the nine-inning affair. This will serve as a good precursor for this weekend's crucial series at Gallaudet. The Nittany Lions will need to put out a strong performance in order to keep hold of the fourth and final playoff position for the NEAC playoffs. They will face a strong squad in the Bison who themselves have something to play for, as they are locked in a battle with Penn State Berks over the first place in the standings and the right to host the entire tournament.
