Nittany Lions Suffer Setback at Berks

Box Score Reading, Pa. – Penn State Abington faced in-state foe Penn State Berks in the finale of a three-game weekend series earlier Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for Abington, the squad was still unable to get much going offensively, as Berks held Penn State Abington to just six hits all day in their 7-3 victory. Tom Kreiling had the lone RBI for the Nittany Lions, while Christian Thompson and Tim Hart once again combined for a solid performance out of the bullpen for the Blue and White.

Penn State Abington (7-12, 1-5 NEAC) once again found themselves behind the eight-ball early in today's contest, as Penn State Berks (7-10, 3-0 NEAC) scored six runs in the first four innings of play. The hosts used sacrifice flies in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, and then in the fourth, they tacked on four more runs on four hits, a hit-by-pitch, and an Abington error. Penn State Abington did manage to cut into that deficit in the top of the fifth, though, when Kreiling drew a bases loaded walk to force home the first run. Then, Ted Smallwood grounded into a double play, allowing Trey Guaglionona to score and making it a 6-2 ballgame. However, Berks got one of those runs back in the sixth on yet another sac fly, and Abington only got one more run out of the game thanks to a wild pitch. When Kreiling flied out to left to end the game, Penn State Abington was stuck on the short end of the 7-3 score line.

The loss drops the Nittany Lions to 1-5 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, and 7-12 overall. They'll look to get off the schneid when they hit the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference test against The College of New Jersey. Game time is set for 3:30 pm at Alverthorpe Park in Jenkintown.
