Softball Takes Two From Wilson

Phoenix can't handle hot bats of Nittany Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Chambersburg, Pa. – Penn State Abington's softball squad went on the road to play a doubleheader against Wilson College earlier Sunday afternoon. It was certainly a successful trip, as the Nittany Lions took both games from the Phoenix by scores of and 7-6. Michaela Drogalis and Emily Wrenn earned the wins for the Blue and White, who keep their conference record unblemished at 4-0 on the year.

Game one was a pitcher's duel early on, as both starters got through the first four innings without any problems. However, in the top of the fifth, the Nittany Lions (5-1, 4-0 NEAC) finally powered through for three runs. Two runners came home thanks to an error on a groundball hit by Bianca Monerosso. Later in the inning, Sheila O'Hagan got on base and stole second, and on the same play, Monterosso was able to come home, making it a 3-0 game. Wilson (4-6, 1-2 NEAC) came back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Blue and White scored three more runs in the top of the seventh to re-extend their lead. Monterosso picked up an RBI with a single to knock in Danielle Jones. Later on in the inning, Breanna Lineman grounded out, but that also drove in Monterosso, making it a 5-1 game. In the next at-bat, Sam Kidd singled, scoring Sheila O'Hagan and giving the Nittany Lions their six runs in the game. Wilson came back with a single run in the bottom of the frame, but it wasn't enough, and the Nittany Lions were able come away with a 6-2 victory.

The Nittany Lions got game two underway in a dominant fashion. In the first inning, Danielle Jones led off with a walk, and then Bianca Monterosso followed that up with a bunt single. Both runners then moved up a bag thanks to a passed ball. Sheila O'Hagan came to the plate next, and she drove in a run with an RBI groundout to third. Monterosso then came home thanks to an error by the Wilson catcher. Breanna Lineman got on next with a single, then moved to second on another passed ball. Michaela Drogalis drove her home with another RBI single, and Penn State Abington held a 3-0 lead right out of the gates. In the second frame, that lead increased, thanks to a two-RBI single from O'Hagan. She would later score on a groundout by Sam Kidd. In the third, Caroline Gannon got things started with a walk, and she came home on an RBI single by Nicole Battaglio, making it a 7-0 game. Then the hosts began their comeback. Wilson got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to an RBI double from Megan Schneck and an RBI single by Kayla Sullenberger. They then scored again in the bottom of the fourth with another RBI single to make it 7-3. In the bottom of the fifth, a pair of RBI groundouts brought home two more runs. Penn State Abington starter Emily Wrenn got through the fifth without allowing any runs, but then Wilson led off the final frame with back-to-back doubles to cut their deficit to just one run. However, Wrenn buckled down and battled back, and when Katelyn Wingerd flew out to left for the final out of the frame, Penn State Abington clinched the 7-6 victory.

With the wins, the Nittany Lions move to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The team will have an off day on Monday before playing their home opener on Tuesday, April 8th. Penn State Abington will host the College of St. Elizabeth for another crucial NEAC doubleheader, with game one slated to start at 3:00 pm.
