Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball squad got their bats back on track earlier today in their contest against Arcadia University. The Nittany Lions exploded for eight runs on eleven hits, an offensive production higher than the last four games combined for the Blue and White. However, the Knights proved to be quite potent themselves, and after ten-plus innings of play, the teams remained deadlocked at 8-8. Darkness proved to be the ultimate decider on this day, forcing the teams in this non-conference tilt to be content with a tie.
After falling behind early, the Nittany Lions (7-12-1, 1-5 NEAC) came roaring back in the top of the fifth.
A.J. Vagliani got things started with a leadoff double, and then
Fran Caruso followed that up with a double of his own, making it a 5-1 ballgame. A walk put men on first and second, and then
Vince DiPiero tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. He executed perfectly, forcing the first baseman to come charging in and make a play on the ball. When he turned to throw to first, he instead threw the ball off the body of DiPiero, and the ball got away from the infield. This moved everybody up an extra bag, putting runners on second and third and plating Caruso to make it 5-2.
Tom Kreiling was next to bat, and he laced the third double of the inning well into center field, scoring two more runs and cutting the deficit to just one run.
Ted Smallwood came to the plate next looking to sacrifice and move Kreiling up, and once again, the Arcadia fielder threw the ball off Smallwood, allowing Kreiling to score from second and knotting the game back up at five-all.
Tom Ditro doubled after that, moving Smallwood to third, and he would later score on a sacrifice fly by
Mike Scaringelli to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the day at 6-5.
After
Brian Camp pitched a scoreless fifth to hold Arcadia (3-18-1, 2-10 MAC Commonwealth) scoreless, Penn State Abington tacked on more runs in the sixth. With runners on first and second and two outs, Smallwood singled up the middle to bring home
Trey Guaglionona, making it a 7-5 ballgame. After the Knights made a pitching change, the runners moved up thanks to a passed ball, allowing Kreiling to come home for an 8-5 advantage. That lead would be short lived, however, as Arcadia would come back to tie the ballgame back up in the bottom of the sixth on three unearned runs. With the teams deadlocked at 8-8, neither side was able to push any more baserunners across all the way into the 11
th inning. With Penn State Abington at bat and runners at first and second with one out, both head coaches agreed that the light was too low to safely continue play, and the teams shook hands in agreement on an 8-8 split.
With the tie, the Nittany Lions snap a five-game losing streak, and they'll look to transition back into the win column when they get back out on the diamond tomorrow afternoon for another non-conference tilt. This time, the Blue and White will host Rutgers-Camden, who currently sit a 13-6-1 on the year and in a tie for first place in the highly competitive NJAC conference. Game time is set for 3:30 pm at Alverthorpe Park in Jenkintown.
