Box Score 2 COBLESKILL, N.Y. – After opening the day with a pivotal win over Wilson College to extend their run in the North Eastern Athletic Conference tournament, the Penn State Abington softball team's season came to a close in the late afternoon game. Abington and SUNYIT battled through a tight game before the Wildcats scored eight combined runs in the second and sixth innings to move on to tomorrow's showdown.
Penn State Abington's offense came ready to play Saturday for the 2 p.m. start against Wilson College. The Nittany Lions got all of their nine runs in inning one-through-four and freshman pitcher,
Emily Wrenn limited Wilson to just one hit as Abington eliminated the Phoenix from the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships, 9-1 in five innings. This was Abington's first postseason victory in program history since joining the NEAC in 2008.
A pair of home runs by junior catcher
Sheila O'Hagan in the first and third inning gave Abington the 5-1 lead before the Nittany Lions added four additional runs in the fourth frame with O'Hagan collecting her fifth RBI of the game on a single through the middle to remain perfect a plate (3-for-3) on the day.
Wrenn pitched all five innings on the mound for the Blue and White, allowing just one run on three hits as she fanned three in the 20 batters faced.
Abington looked to keep the keep the strong offensive attack going in the second contest of the day versus the Wildcats of SUNYIT.
Abington and SUNYIT batters each amounted hits off the pitching staffs in the first innings with the Wildcats scoring four runs on six hits as the Nittany Lions rallied back with three runs on four hits in the bottom frame.
O'Hagan knocked in a two-run home run to put the Blue and White on the board before freshman infielder
Breanna Lineman also homered to cut the deficit to just one run.
Sophomore pitcher
Michaela Drogalis, who gave up the four runs in the first inning, struggled on the mound for the Nittany Lions as she gave up two additional SUNYIT runs in the second inning before being relieved by Wrenn, who also struggled as she gave up up three additional runs as the Wildcats took a commanding 9-3 lead after two innings.
Wrenn remained steadfast in the next four innings as she kept the Wildcats off the board while Abington went to work in the third inning as sophomore first baseman
Nicole Battaglio posted an RBI single as Abington now trailed 9-3 after three frames.
The pitching improved for both teams in the next three innings as neither teams could place a runner past second base in three tries. The Wildcats broke the norm in the top of the sixth, scoring three additional runs to extend the lead to 12-3.
With the game and the season on the line, the Nittany Lions didn't go down without a fight in an all-or-nothing bottom of the sixth inning but all the final three Abington batters could muster were a ground out to third, a pop up to third, and a fly out to left field, ending the game in favor of the Wildcats and ending the season.
O'Hagan led the Blue and White in the postseason with four home runs, eight RBIs, and six runs of her own after posting a .700 average (7-for10). Freshman outfielder
Carla Ruscio went 5-for-10 at the plate and scored three runs of her own and collected a triple, while Lineman posted a home run, a double, and four runs of her own as well, for a .444 batting average (4-for-9).
The Nittany Lions will end the 2014 campaign with 22-11 overall record and finished second in the South Division with a 15-5 record in the NEAC to qualify for the postseason tournament for the second straight seasons.
