Nittany Lions Sweep New Rochelle

JENKINTOWN, Pa – The Penn State Abington Baseball team claimed a sweep in their double header against The College of New Rochelle at Alverthorpe Park. On this cold March Day, the Nittany Lions were red hot. Abington defeated New Rochelle 11-2 in the first game and 17-2 in the second game. The team had a total of 26 hits for both games. The two wins improved their record to 7-6.

In the first game, Abington had a commanding 4-0 after four innings. During the bottom of the 5th inning, freshman Jaden Himmelreich (Temple, PA) landed an RBI single after hitting to the gap in right field. During the same inning, freshman Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) notched a two RBI's by driving in Jon Rivera (Egg Harbor City, NJ) and Himmelreich.

It wasn't just on offense that Abington made big plays but also on defense. In the top of the 7th inning, Sophomore Stevie Stevenson (Westampton, NJ) made an incredible and athletic over-the-head catch at centerfield that snubbed New Rochelle from scoring. Freshman pitcher Michael Riley (Stratford, NJ) claimed the win in the first game.

In the second game, Abington continued where they left off, senior Austin Mikula (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled out to center field for the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The hit advanced a runner to second base and drove home a run to give Abington an 8-1 advantage.

In the 6th inning, Abington would solidify their impressive performance after junior Brett Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) singled to center field which gave Abington two more runs on the day. Freshman Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) earned the win in game two after a dominate performance on the mound.

Abington will return to action on Tuesday as they host NJAC Conference's Rowan University at 3:30 P.M.
