JENKINTOWN, Pa – The Penn State Abington Baseball team claimed a sweep in their double header against The College of New Rochelle at Alverthorpe Park. On this cold March Day, the Nittany Lions were red hot. Abington defeated New Rochelle 11-2 in the first game and 17-2 in the second game. The team had a total of 26 hits for both games. The two wins improved their record to 7-6.
In the first game, Abington had a commanding 4-0 after four innings. During the bottom of the 5
th inning, freshman
Jaden Himmelreich (Temple, PA) landed an RBI single after hitting to the gap in right field. During the same inning, freshman
Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) notched a two RBI's by driving in
Jon Rivera (Egg Harbor City, NJ) and Himmelreich.
It wasn't just on offense that Abington made big plays but also on defense. In the top of the 7
th inning, Sophomore
Stevie Stevenson (Westampton, NJ) made an incredible and athletic over-the-head catch at centerfield that snubbed New Rochelle from scoring. Freshman pitcher
Michael Riley (Stratford, NJ) claimed the win in the first game.
In the second game, Abington continued where they left off, senior
Austin Mikula (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled out to center field for the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the 2
nd inning. The hit advanced a runner to second base and drove home a run to give Abington an 8-1 advantage.
In the 6
th inning, Abington would solidify their impressive performance after junior
Brett Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) singled to center field which gave Abington two more runs on the day. Freshman
Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) earned the win in game two after a dominate performance on the mound.
Abington will return to action on Tuesday as they host NJAC Conference's Rowan University at 3:30 P.M.
