Abington Racks Up All-Region Recognition

Five members of the Penn State Abington baseball team received All-Region honors with the recent announcements of the D3Baseball.com and the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region teams this week.  Junior Justin Fogel was named to the D3Baseball.com All-Region 4 first team, while fellow junior Tim Petrucelli garnered third team recognition from the organization.  Fogel and Petrucelli were both selected to the All-Region 4 first team by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), while senior Zach Morales was named to the second team.  In addition, seniors Josh Baar and Sean Doherty received third team accolades from the ABCA. 
 
Fogel is earning All-Region honors for the second straight season after being named to the D3Baseball.com All-Region 3rd team and the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region 1st team a year ago.  The United East Player of the Year had a stellar 2023 campaign as he currently leads Division III in hitting with a career-high .497 batting average.  He also established career-highs with 72 hits, 14 doubles, two triples and 15 home runs.  Fogel scored a career-high 54 runs and drove in 53 setting a career-best in that category as well. Fogel was named the United East Player of the Week three times during the year as well as being featured on D3Baseball.com's Team of the Week three times.
 
Fogel registered at least one hit in all but one game this year and finished the season on a 26-game hitting streak. It marks the second straight season he concluded with a hitting streak of 20 games or more.  In 2022, Fogel closed out the year hitting safely in every game played in with a hit in all 20 games.
 
In 78 career games, Fogel owns a .470 batting average with 151 hits, 30 doubles, three triples, 25 home runs, 119 runs and 102 RBI.  His 25 homers are tied for second most in program history.
 
Petrucelli is now a two-time All-Region recipient after being selected to the D3Baseball.com All-Region 3rd team for the second straight season and the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region 1st team for the second consecutive year as well.
 
Petrucelli, a two-time All-United East 1st team honoree, put together another superb season for the Nittany Lions.  Petrucelli batted a career-high .364 and set career marks in hits (51), home runs (13), RBI (46), slugging (.743) and fielding percentage (.975).
 
He had three multi-home run games this year, including a 3-for-4 performance against St. Mary's College (Md.) where he drove in four runs and scored twice. He also tied his career-high with two five RBI games against Penn College and Wells College.
 
In 81 career games, Petrucelli concluded his Abington career with a .345 batting average to go along with 101 hits, 21 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs, 91 RBI and 109 runs.  His 21 home runs are third most in program history.
 
Morales is earning ABCA/Rawlings All-Region 2nd team honors for the second straight season.  It was another stellar season in what turned out to be a historic career for Morales.  He finished the year batting .358 with career-highs in runs (54), doubles (12), home runs (12), slugging (.679) and hits (58).
 
He highlighted the regular season with a 4-for-8 performance at Gallaudet University where he drove in a career-high eight RBI to go along with five runs, one triple and one home run. He also drove in five runs on three separate occasions, including five in the team's United East Tournament win against Penn College.
 
In 158 career games, all starts, Morales is a .351 lifetime hitter and ranks second all-time in hits (213), home runs (25), RBI (177) and runs (149). Morales is a three-time All-Conference selection and a two-time All-Region recipient.
 
Baar is earning All-Region honors for the first time in his career with his selection to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region 3rd team.  Earlier in the month Baar was selected to the All-United East 2nd team for the first time as well.
 
The 2023 season was career year at the plate for Baar as he finished hitting over .300 for the first time in his career with a .307 average.  Baar set career-highs in runs (40), hits (43), doubles (13), triples (2), home runs (8), RBI (38), walks (37) and on-base percentage (.433).
 
Baar tied his career-high with four RBI after going 3-for-5 at the plate against Penn State Harrisburg in the United East Tournament.  He launched a game-tying two-run homer in the top half of the ninth inning to send the game into extra innings. A week prior to that, Baar registered his first career multi-homer game against Harrisburg in the regular season finale where he went 3-for-3 with four runs and three RBI.
 
In 72 career games, Baar is batting .292 with 63 hits, 18 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 63 RBI and 59 runs scored.
 
Doherty is earning All-Region honors for the first time in his career with his selection to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region 3rd team.  Doherty started all 40 games at second base for the Nittany Lions while batting a career-high .377.  He finished the season setting career marks in hits (57), home runs (4), slugging (.523), walks (36) and on-base percentage (.520).  Doherty tied his career-high with 52 runs.
 
Doherty had a career day in the regular season doubleheader at Lancaster Bible when he went a combined 4-for-6 at the plate with six runs and four RBI.  He also connected on his first career home run in game one and followed that up with another blast in game two. Doherty hit his first career grand slam at in the series finale at Gallaudet University as he drove in a season-high four runs.
 
In 111 career games, Doherty owns a career .353 batting average to go along with 146 hits, 30 doubles, four home runs, 132 runs and 79 RBI. 
 
Abington wrapped up the 2023 season with a 19-21 overall record and a 13-8 mark in the United East to earn the third seed in the conference tournament.  Abington was appearing in its 11th United East Tournament overall and seventh straight with the exception of the 2020 season when the tournament was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
