Werner Selected United East Defensive Player of the Week

Latham, N.Y. – Penn State Abington senior Brendan Werner was named the United East Conference (UEC) Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 19 as announced by the conference office earlier in the week.  This is Werner's second weekly award this season and third of his career.

Last week Abington went 2-0-0 as Werner recorded a pair of shutouts for his fifth and sixth clean slates of the season.  Werner recorded five saves in a 1-0 victory at Lancaster Bible College and finished the week with a two-save performance to preserve a 2-0 triumph against Mount Aloysius College. Werner, the program's all-time leader in shutouts, now has 18 in his career.

This week Werner recorded his 20th victory in net for the Nittany Lions with a 3-1 victory against Cairn University.  He'll enter Saturday's regular season finale tied with former standout Esteban Leon for the most wins by a goalkeeper in program history.

Abington (8-6-3, 6-1-0 UEC) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday as the Nittany Lions travel to face Wilson College.  Abington has secured a top-four seed in the upcoming United East championships.  With a win against the Phoenix combined with either a tie in the Penn College/Penn State Harrisburg finale or a Penn College win, the Nittany Lions will clinch the second seed for the second straight season.
