Werner Named United East Defensive Player of the Week

Latham, N.Y. – Penn State Abington senior goalkeeper Brendan Werner was named the United East Conference (UEC) Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 30.  This marks the first weekly United East honor of the season for Werner and his second of his career.

In a 2-0-0 week for the Nittany Lions, Werner recorded a pair of shutouts in net against New Jersey City University and Notre Dame of Maryland University.  Werner made six stops in the 4-0 victory against New Jersey City, while the Abington defense held Notre Dame to just three shots (none on-goal) in another 4-0 triumph.  The two shutouts gave Werner three on the year and increased his career total to 15.

In six starts this season, Werner holds a goals against average of 1.64 and has totaled 21 saves.

Abington (2-5-3, 1-0-0 UEC) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 as the Nittany Lions travel to face St. Mary's College (Md.) in a rematch of last year's United East Championship game.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
