Rafferty and Ortiz Earn Top Weekly Honors

Latham, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team made it a complete sweep of the United East Conference (UEC) Weekly Honors for the week ending Oct. 4. Junior Frankie Rafferty was named the Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Hector Ortiz was tabbed the Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday.

Rafferty is earning conference weekly honors for the first time in his career, while Ortiz is receiving his second Defensive Player of the Week award.

Abington went 2-0-0 this past week against conference opponents as the Nittany Lions registered a pair of shutouts. Abington defeated Cairn University, 4-0, on the road and capped the week with a 6-0 triumph against Penn State Brandywine.

Rafferty scored three goals and was credited with the game-winning score in both games. He opened the scoring in the four-goal win at Cairn before finding the back of the net twice, including the opening goal in the 6-0 win against Brandywine for his first multi-goal game of his career. Rafferty finished the week with six points and is currently tied for the United East lead with seven goals this season.

Ortiz logged 135 minutes without allowing a goal this past week, including a six-save shutout at Cairn that tied his season-high for saves. Ortiz followed that up by keeping Brandywine off the scoreboard during the opening half of the team's one-sided victory, contributing to the Nittany Lions' second shutout of the week.

In seven starts this season, Ortiz owns a 0.67 goals against average to go along with 27 saves and two shutouts.

Abington (4-4-3, 3-0-0 UEC) is back in action on Wednesday afternoon as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in a United East contest. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
