Medina Named United East Defensive Player of the Week

Latham, N.Y. – Penn State Abington junior Fabiola Medina was named the United East Conference (UEC) Women's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 20 as announced by the conference office on Monday. This is the first time this season Medina has been recognized by the conference and her fourth weekly award of her career.

Abington went a perfect 3-0 last week with victories at Albright College (W, 3-0), Goucher College (W, 3-0) and Eastern Mennonite University (W, 3-2).

Medina averaged an impressive 6.25 digs per set and recorded at least 20 digs in all three victories. She opened the week with 25 digs in the victory at Albright before posting at the time a season-high 27 digs in a shutout victory over Goucher. She finished the week with 23 digs in a five-set triumph over Eastern Mennonite. In addition, Medina committed just one reception error across the entire week.

In her recent match on Monday night, Medina recorded a match-high 37 digs to set a new season-best in the team's thrilling 3-2 victory at Gallaudet University. It marked just the second-ever victory against the Bison and the first since 2019.

In 10 matches this season, Medina is averaging a season-high 5.76 digs per set to go along with 32 service aces.

Abington (7-3, 1-0 UEC) returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 23 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference contest. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
