Mike Marvin scored 28 points to lead the Penn State Abington men's basketball team to a 113-102 overtime-win against SUNY IT on Sunday afternoon. With the conference victory, the Nittany Lions improve to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, while the Wildcats fall to 1-13, 0-4 on the season.
During the first half, SUNYIT jumped ahead to a ten point lead as Justin Brignola drained a three-pointer to make it 30-20. Abington vigorously fought back into contention as
Corey Curtis stole the ball and post it for a layup twice for the Nittany Lions to trail by one point at the 5:13 mark.
The Wildcats answered back as Brignola hits another three-pointer to finish the half. Abington trailed 52-43 as they headed into the locker room.
During the start of the second half, the Wildcats continued to overwhelm Abington as Alex Grimmer posted a layup to extend the lead for SUNYIT by 11. Abington began to find hope and intensity during the 15:23 mark when Marvin stole the ball and answered with a dunk to swing the momentum the other way.
After a back and forth battle, despite trailing by 12 points as Sejad Gromilic went up for a layup for SUNIT at the 5:19 mark, Abington refused to give up as Colacci nailed a three-pointer to start the comeback for the Nittany Lions.
With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Abington began cutting the deficit to four as Senior
Corey Curtis nailed his second three-pointer to make it 98-94. Thirty seconds later, Marvin recovers the rebound and posted a layup to bring it down to two. With nine seconds remaining on the clock,
Don DeLeo recovered the defensive rebound off of SUNYIT Brignola's free-throw attempt, and loft the ball to Marvin, who then made the game tying layup to send the game into overtime with the score tied, 98-98.
Abington outscored SUNYIT, 15-4, in the five minute period to earn its third win over an NEAC opponent this season, 113-102.
Will Alton sparked the Nittany Lions' last-minute efforts, scoring six of the Nittany Lions' 15 points in overtime.
Marvin collected his ninth double double of the season as he not only scored 28 points, but also grabbed 14 rebounds. Alton Finished the game with a season-high 25 points, six rebounds and two steals. Curtis led the team in steals with five and netted 14 total points while DeLeo contributed 11 points and five rebounds during the game.
The Nittany Lions return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday when they host Penn State Berks in a NEAC Conference matchup.
