Lady Lions Drop Second Straight to Sea Gulls, 90-54

Box Score
Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team lost its second straight road game Saturday afternoon, dropping a 90-54 decision to the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University.

The Sea Gulls caught Abington off guard, jumping out of the gate with a 13 point spree before Abington managed to post two points on the board within five minutes of the opening tip-off on a jumper by freshmen Teharah Worrell. Abington hoped to shift the momentum, but Salisbury continued to pressure the Nittany Lions, converting 24 points off of 16 turnovers during the first half. The Sea Gulls extended their lead by 35 points before sophomore Jessica Schmidt posted a layup in the paint with a feed from senior Trish Watson before the buzzer signaled the half as both teams headed into the locker room with Salisbury leading 56-23.

Abington looked to bounce back after a poor start, shooting point for point with the Sea Gulls, cut the deficit down to just 31 points in the first seven minutes of the second half. Despite the efforts and the hustling on defense, Abington could not figure out how to contain Salisbury's offense as they spread the ball frequently as 12 players on the roster scored at least two points with freshmens Julia McLaughlin and Kathy Albornoz leading the squad with six points apiece in the second half.

Worrell led all scorers with 18 points on the day and managed to chip in four rebounds as well. Schmidt, who was named All-Tournament Team, posted 14 points and seven rebounds in the game, while junior Janay Winston shot 57% from the field for 10 points. McLaughlin led the Sea Gulls with 18 points, while sophomore Anna Hackett tallied in 10 points and seven assists.

With the loss, Abington falls to 0-2 on the season. The Nittany Lions return to action Tuesday, Nov. 20 when they host Rosemont College at 6 p.m in the home opener.
