Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped an 84-76 home contest to the visiting Knights of Arcadia University Saturday afternoon. The loss puts the Nittany Lions' record at 2-7 overall, while Arcadia improves to 6-3 on the season.
Sophomore
Avery Barnes had 16 points and a career-high17 rebounds and seven blocks. Fellow classmate,
Mike Marvin added 16 points and 15 rebounds. It was the seventh double-double of the season for Marvin, the Nittany Lions' 6-foot-5 forward, who boosted his rebounds per game to 13.3.
Sophomore
Max Alton netted 15 points and collected six assists, while junior
Kyle Battell came up with 10 points and two steals on the day.
Arcadia guard, Aaron Lee-Webb posted a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists for the Knights.
The Nittany Lions would respond on the defensive end and cut the lead to 44-43 15:56 left in the game. Abington would still trail by five with 2:49 to go in the game (77-72) but would fall 84-76.
The game started out with high expectations and very tight-knight affair, with neither team being able to gain any significant advantage over the other in the opening minutes.
Trailing by as many as six in the half, the Nittany Lions would cut the lead to just one point on a pair of free throws by Alton and
Darien Mitchell with 8:39 to go before the half. The Knights would extend the lead and post the final bucket on the period to take a 42-33 lead into the locker room.
Trailing by nine at the half, Abington would opened the second half with a pair of 3-pointers by Alton, before a pair of layups by Barnes cut the Nittany Lions' deficit to 44-43 with 15:56 left in the game.
A layup by Marvin sparked an 11-0 run at the 12:20 mark for Abington to retake and extend the lead by as many as 11 in the half. After trailing 61-50 midway through the second half, the Knights responded with a 26-9 run of its own to take a 76-70 lead at the 4:35 mark and it was a lead that Arcadia would hold onto for the remainder of the game. Abington pressed one more time to retake the advantage, but in the end, there simply was not enough time as the Knights held on for the 84-76 victory.
Abington closed the first half shooting 40 percent from the field (8-for-20) and 41.7 percent from 3-point range (5-for-12). The Nittany Lions were 12-for-18 from the charity stripe (66.7 percent).
The Knights were 17-for-41 from the field (41.5 percent) and 5-for-12 from the long range (41.7 percent).
The Nittany Lions will conclude the 2012 calendar with a road trip to Center Valley, Pa. to take on the host, DeSales University, in the Red Robin Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29
