READING, Pa. – Coming off a sweep over Cairn University last week, the Penn State Abington women's tennis team hoped to extend the winning streak to two, but slipped to Albright College 6-3 on Friday afternoon.
Abington managed to pick up two points in doubles play but could only come up with one point by sophomore Olga Popili in singles play.
The Lady Lions opened their first match of the day with a pair of doubles win. Senior
Evgenia Nigay and
Lori Phillips picked up the first victory in first doubles with a 8-5 decision over Melissa Carberry and Erin Sullivan in the second slot.
Lauren Hetzel and newcomer
Carly Powell contributed the second doubles point for Abington overcoming the pressure by Elizabeth Benston and Christina Peacock for the 8-5 victory in No. 3 doubles.
Jenny Abraham and Popili struggled to clinch a point, dropping an 8-0 decision.
Popili refused to give up and set the tone for Abington in singles play, edging Sullivan with a 7-6, 7-5 decision, which turned out to be the only point that the Lady Lions could gather during singles play.
Despite the loss, Nigay managed to claw her way through the No. 5 singles, forcing a third set after dropping the first set 7-6, before fighting back to win the second 6-4. However, it wasn't enough as Nigay was handed the 10-5 decision.
The Lady Lions returns to action next Wednesday as they take on the Falcons of Cedar Crest College for the 3:30 p.m. match.
