Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped its season opener against Randolph-Macon, 109-86 in the opener of the Radisson Invitational hosted by the University of Scranton.
Junior forward
Mike Marvin led the Nittany Lions with 20 points on the night, while freshman guard
Nisiar Smith scored 18 points for the Blue and White. Sophomore forward
Avery Barnes tallied nine points with eight rebounds and three steals in the loss.
Randolph-Macon got off to a fast start as the Yellow Jackets began the game on a 14-9 run at the 16:14 mark. Marvin managed to cut the deficit to two on a free throw and a layup. A layup by Marcus Badger sparked a 15-2 run for the Yellow Jackets with 6:28 remaining in the first half. With two minutes remaining in the half, Abington managed to reduce the margin to single digit as Marvin nailed both of his free throws to make it a nine-point game before the buzzer as both teams headed into the locker room with Randolph-Macon leading 47-38.
After the break, Abington came up with a huge block by Barnes to start the second half, converting the possession into a three from senior guard
RJ Handy followed by a steal by Smith finishing with an alley-oop to Barnes for the dunk as the Nittany Lions trail by just two points.
After a pair of missed throws by the Yellow Jackets, Marvin recovered the rebound and later posted the basket off the backboard to tie up the game, however the Yellow Jackets pressed on to keep the lead from escaping from their grip, thanks to a pair of threes by Connor Sullivan and Braeshaun Dozier, to extend the lead 63-52 with 14:16 remaining in the game.
Abington attempted its final comeback of the game, starting with a pair of free throws by Handy, cutting the deficit down to five, but it was not enough as Randolph-Macon contained the Blue and White's attack in the final 12 minutes of game, converting the points off of Abington's missed attempts to extend the lead by as much as 22 points for the 109-86 victory.
Both teams were equal in shots made as Abington shot 30-for-69 (43.5%) from the field, while Randolph-Macon shot 36-for-71 (50.7%) from the field. Free throws would end up deciding the game as the Yellow Jackets converted two more free throws than Abington. The Blue and White were 25-for-32 (78.1%) from the stripe, while Randolph-Macon was 27-for-34 (79.4%) from the line.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, November 16
th, as Abington will play Immaculata University in the consolation round of the Radisson Invitational. Game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
