Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime Contest to Immaculata

Mike Marvin nets another double-double in tough 93-95 loss

Box Score
Scranton, Pa. - The Penn State Abington men's basketball squad saw a double-digit lead slip away in the second half as the Mighty Macs of Immaculata put together a late charge to tie, and eventually win, the consolation game of the Scranton Tip-Off tournament earlier this afternoon. Junior forward Mike Marvin led the squad with 34 points and 15 rebounds on the afternoon, while RJ Handy chipped in another 16 points and 4 assists.

The Nittany Lions (0-2, 0-0 NEAC) jumped out to a lead of as much as 14 points by the midway period of the first half. Back-to-back three pointers from Kevin Cooper and Max Alton pushed the Blue and White lead to that double digit mark with 8:25 to go in the half. The Mighty Macs (1-1, 0-0 CSAC) made their first of many comback efforts in the game by slowly chipping their deficit back to just four with 5:48 to play in the half, before the Nittany Lions stormed back once more. This time, a seven-point run, capped off by a Mike Marvin fastbreak layup plus a foul and subsequent made free throw made it 39-28 in favor of Penn State Abington. Still, by the time halftime rolled around, Immaculata had closed the gap yet again, this time down to just six points.

Once again, the Blue and White looked to assert their dominance, and did so for the opening ten minutes of the second frame. When Avery Barnes drained a pair of free throws with just 9:08 left to play to put the Nittany Lions up by 19 points, it might have appeared that the game was well in hand. Immaculata tried to cut the lead down, and did manage to do so bit by bit, but Penn State Abington still held a double-digit, 83-73 lead with just over three minutes left to play. Then the Mighty Macs made their strongest charge of the afternoon. Over the final three minutes, they scored 13 points, capped off by a game-tying layup from Brandon Smith with 35 seconds to play to tie the score at 86 apiece. The Nittany Lions had one final look at the go-ahead basket, but a jumper wouldn't go, and the teams headed to a five minute overtime.

Once again, Penn State Abington jumped out to a quick five point lead off a three-ball from Nisiar Smith, who then sank a pair of free throws a minute later to make it 91-86 with 2:56 left in the overtime period. Still, it would not be enough to overcome one final Mighty Macs charge. When Tyreek Peeples drained a three pointer, it gave Immaculata their first lead since the 16:21 mark of the first half. Another layup from Brandon Smith made it a three point lead with 59 seconds to play. Mike Marvin came to the other end a nailed a pair of free throws to cut the lead to one, but it was as close as Penn State Abington would get the rest of the day. In the end, the Nittany Lions couldn't get a last second shot to fall, and the squad ultimately lost the game 95-93.

With the loss, the Blue and White drop to 0-2 on the season. Marvin was named to the All-Tournament team, a selection of the five best players to compete in this weekend's tip-off tournament. The Nittany Lions will now come back to Abington for their home opener this Wednesday, November 20th against Penn State Lehigh Valley. Gametime is set for 7:00 pm.
