Nittany Lions Earn Seventh Straight Victory

Balanced attack leads to 85-74 Abington Win

Box Score Abington, Pa. - Penn State Abington had four players score in double figures earlier this afternoon against Gallaudet, leading the Nittany Lions to their seventh straight victory. Junior guard Mike Colacci had 20 points and 3 assists to lead the home team, who now sit in great position to grab a playoff spot for the NEAC tournament.

Gallaudet (10-14, 6-7 NEAC) actually took an early 6-3 lead in the game, but after back-to-back three pointers from Colacci and fellow junior R.J. Handy, the Nittany Lions jumped back ahead by three and never looked back. Although the Bison kept the game close early, as the minutes wore on, the Nittany Lions slowly extended their lead. With 6:28 left in the half, a three-ball from sophomore Max Alton gave Penn State Abington their first double-digit lead of the game at 33-23.With 1:30 remaining, Handy drove to the lane and sank a layup, giving the Nittany Lions their largest first half lead at 41-28. Although the Bison hit a jumper of their own to close the deficit to 11 at the half, the Nittany Lions still went to the lockers with a comfortable lead to look forward to in the second frame.

As the second half ran its course, the Nittany Lions (11-12, 9-3 NEAC) only continued to extend their lead. A layup from sophomore Avery Barnes with 6:36 left to play put Penn State Abington ahead by 67-51, their largest lead of the game. Gallaudet would use a small streak of their own to get back within seven points with just over four minutes to play, but the Nittany Lions drained all their free throws that they needed to, and by the time all was said and done, Penn State Abington coasted to an 85-74 victory.

Once again, the Nittany Lions were led by Mike Colacci with 20 points on the day. Max Alton finished with 17 points, while RJ Handy and Avery Barnes had 16 each. Ken Watson was the lone senior on the squad, and he celebrated his going-away party this Senior Day with 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. Gallaudet was led by Danny Kelly and Layton Seeber, who scored 27 and 22 points, respectively.

The win was Penn State Abington's seventh straight victory, propelling them to an 11-12 overall record and an impressive 9-3 record in the conference. The victory also moves the Nittany Lions a half-game ahead of Penn State Berks for first place in the NEAC South Division with just one week of regular season play remaining. The Nittany Lions will have a chance to extend their lead over their rivals from Reading when they hit the floor this Wednesday for a game against Lancaster Bible on the road.
