Women's Tennis Earns Second Straight Conference Win

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis kicked off conference play with a 6-3 win over Penn State Harrisburg Sunday afternoon.

The win propels the Blue and White squad to 6-8 overall this season, 2-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). The loss was Harrisburg's first in league play after winning two straight, dropping them to 5-6 overall.

Abington had another strong showing from Lori Phillips and Alexandra Murianka winning four straight singles matches. After a tough 8-5 loss with her partner Murianka, Phillips claimed the No. 2 singles matchup in three sets (7-5, 4-6, 6-2) to improve to 5-8 this season. Murianka was just as impressive, earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 to improve to 4-1 on the year.

Olya Popili and her partner, Carly Powell, had a strong outing at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-0 before each player swept their opponents in straight sets at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2) and 6 (6-0, 6-0), respectively.

Evgenia Nigay clinched the sixth and final point for Abington with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

The Nittany Lions returns to the courts on Wednesday, April 10 for a conference matchup with the College of Saint Elizabeth. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Abington.
