DOVER, Del. –The Wesley College Wolverines nudged Penn State Abington 1-0 in men's soccer action on a humid night.
Wesley Danny Ramirez put up the match's lone goal early in the 23
rd minute when Keroll Newby sent a long ball down the middle of the field as Ramirez and Nittany Lions' goalkeeper
Dan Saint-Pol both charged the ball, but Ramirez beat the goalie to it and lifted the ball over the leaping netminder and into the net.
Abington started the match with good pressure, notably through the middle but Wesley's defense held down the neutral third line, forcing the Nittany Lions to be called offsides four times throughout the game. Wesley started to build pressure up top ten minutes in, gaining possession and moving the ball amongst each other and getting off two shots on goal. Abington answered by starting to play the ball over the top, although the Wolvernies defense prevented the visitors from getting quality chances, limiting the Nittany Lions to just three shots in all during the first half.
As the half wore on, Abington started to knock on the door and threaten to equalize with a string of shots including a trio of corner kicks in a span of just thirty seconds that just could not find the back of the net as neither team was able to find the right opportunity and the teams went into halftime with Wesley leading 1-0.
Both squads came out of the break with high energy and fast ball movement, with Abington setting off three shots in just five minutes into the opening of the second half. Through the 80
th minute, there were a lot of back-and-fourth actions across the middle of the field as both teams vied for a chance to tie or a chance for an insurance goal.
Abington would try to press, but Wesley was able to slow down momentum and catch the Nittany Lions being called for offsides with just less an a minute to go as the Wolverines maintained possession to run the clock until the final whistle and the 1-0 victory.
Wolvernie keeper Mark Mattern made five saves for Wesley, who recorded its third-straight shutout as Nittany Lions senior goalkeeper
Dan Saint-Pol (Perkasie, Pa.) registered three saves while taking the loss.
The Nittany Lions (3-2) will be back in action on Saturday, September 21
st at 12 p.m. when they open the North Eastern Athletic Conference play against Penn State Berks at Germantown Academy. Be sure to keep checking abingtonsports.com for all your updates on Nittany Lions athletics!
