ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team's lost to the visiting Cedar Crest Falcons 8-1 this afternoon in the first contest of the fall season.
With three new players in the lineup, Abington (0-1) dropped all three doubles matches. The only returning team,
Olya Popili and
Carly Powell, fell at first double with a 8-3 decision.
Sheena Philip and
Honestee Sphavmixay lost their match, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. While they put up a longer fight, the other new doubles team consisting of
Honora Hegarty and
Y Nhi Nguyen lost 3-8, as well.
Unfortunately, there was little bounce back in singles play. In her first singles match for Nittany Lions, Hegarty put a strong fight at No. 1 singles, losing 3-6, 4-6.
The only real bright spot on the day for Abington was the lone point that
Carly Powell earned at No. 3 singles, coming from behind to take the first set, 7 – 5 and then taking control of the match in the second set, winning 6 – 2 over Cedar Crest's Emily Bryk. However it was little consultation with the match well in hand by the Falcons.
The Lady Lions will return to action on
Tuesday, September 10th when they visit Cairn University for their first away contest of the season.
